What's new

Cotton shirts and shrinking.

So, I just got some new dress shirts. Correct sizing and what not, but everything is a little too big. Now, I know my measurements are right because I have other slim fitting shirts that fit very well. Should I expect the shirts will shrink slightly after a few washes?

I would definitely not expect a size change, but in general they seem just a tad big, and I assume it'll shrink down a bit (maybe they are made to compensate for shrinking?).

Okay great :) Isn't the trick you should put your tie on and two fingers should fit between your collar and neck?

Each brand does sizes differently. Even dress shirts in "slim" from Van Heusen run too big and billow out of my pants. Find a brand that does "slim" right or take it to a tailor.

Very true about Van Heusen, but these are not like too big, just...It seems like they should shrink some.

It also depends on the cotton and how you washed it. If it's a thick oxford type, it tends to shrink some especially if it's washed with hot or warm water. The thinner the cotton and if it's mixed with rayon, nylon, spandex, etc. will reduce the chances of any shrinkage. If it gets dry cleaned, it will remain the same. I dry clean this really cool pair of jeans that fit perfectly and have the deep indigo hue, dry cleaning them keeps them clean without affecting color and material (for the most part).

I plan on washing the new ones a few times this weekend to shrink them a little. They are all 100% cotton according to the tags.
