coticule finishing. BBW .

Hey guys,

I have heard many things about coticule finishing...

but one the things i kept thinking is about the bbw fininshing....

although i didn't try i kept thinking that why fininshing on bbw ? if the yellow layer has finer grit....

also i have heard about mineral oil... but that can come up in a further discussion....

regards

I have a coticule..its BBW on 1 side and the other is yellow...you can use mineral or camellia oil..they both work fine...no need for a slurry stone....I start on the BBW side with oil..then switch to the yellow side also with 2 drops of oil...

The BBW has less tendency to slurry dull and it can actually hone a razor just as keen as the coticule side. Try it you might like it.

As stated above the BBW as a finisher works quite well. Give it a try.

As with coticule stones the BBW may vary from another BBW. It is lower in garnets and slow to release but other than that the stones are similar. I have a natural combo that the BBW side is light and another in which the BBW side is dark and they do act and feel different with and without slurry.

The only online video of anyone using a BBW that I could find was one where the honer used chromium oxide on the BBW to finish.

I know the video and it was made by a member named Bart. He later in a thread somewhere said that the Crox was unnecessary. There are several thread on using BBW if you search. I believe you will find several more at www.coticule.be if you search the forum.

Never really got anywhere with finishing a razor on the blue stuff. i did have success using it in the middle of a dulicot though.
But that coulda been my imagination - I only tried it a few times.
One thing though - I do consistently get one helluva edge on my paring knives with the BBW.

OTOH, I've gotten edges more or less indistinguishable from a yellow coti side (using the BBW/coti combo I bought from Gamma, for comparison's sake). The BBW definitely shines in the middle. Once the bevel is set, I get my best edges off that stone by spending all my time on the BBW side, and then hitting the coti side with a wisp of slurry and then water. Smooth and gummy.

Funnily enough, thats the stone I sorta referenced in my previous post.
But it is not yer average combo. Very special piece. Kinda miss it actually.

Contact David at Naturalwhetstones.com. He can hook you up with a good Ark.

Dont think Im not tempted to consider that Coti....I just got two LL hybrids though. My Dressante Au Bleu and La Rose are prob going back to my friend though - so maybe I could justify it.

Honestly, you're not going to want this one back if your hybrids are as good as mine. It's a great stone, but the hybrid side can take things farther.

Love my LL hybrids. I've had a bunch since this all started and these two are really sweet.

If I started buying back stones I sold I'd be in deep trouble.... there are a few I really regret sellling off though.
That Coti is one of them. I have two other Belgians here that need to relocate first though.
Im kinda out of room to store this stuff and I'm not getting a bigger chest for them.

Mineral oil for the coti bbw then? I been doing slurry with dmt and water. Just did one today, excellent shave, extremely smooth, almost bbs, few spots on the neck, dfs plus i would say, no hht even after strop but a very enjoyable shave nontheless. I have to try the mineral oil, maybe tonight then. I see you guys are using a few drops on either side and I will try that. Used chosera 1k, bbw slurry dilute 1/2 strokes to x strokes , then coti side same to clear water last 10 laps. No water slurry then? Or use oil on last laps.

Or use oil on last laps.

My coti seems to like it if I get down to just water, hone with that for a bit until a good undercut. Then a little squirt of hand soap on a little out of the way corner of the hone, then water some more (the soap diffuses over into the water). I do that for awhile, rinse it all off, then to oil for 30-40 laps. Then I wash the hone with lots of soap.
