Coticle question

Dear BB-ers,

I was just wondering, I will be ordering a Belgian coticule from the mine. (only 150ish miles away from my house it seems  )
Now I was wondering what will be a proper size (in mm) for honing, I was thinking of 150x40mm myself, in all honesty, It will just be used for little touch ups on my own razors, nothing special really.
If it sees action once a month it will be a lot. I will be doing a X-pattern, and I was wondering if the 40mm width will be enough?

P.s. if any duchies feel like ordering 1 too and splitting the shipping (and if the order is above 500 there’s a 10% discount although I don’t see that happening) feel free to say so. I will be ordering within 2 days or so.

I would email rob at ardennes and tell him you are looking for a bout/stone suitable for honing razors.

From my experience, he is good about answering questions.

The one I use is 130x40, and works very well for me for the occasional razor upkeep; so the 150x40 should work fine.

the smallest hone I use is about 150mm x 2mm
it´s a vintage thuringian and is not too easy to use.
You need to pay attention not to skip the blade, so it stays flat on the hone.
That´s the only downside, besides this small hones work fine

perfect size for touch ups and general honing if you want to msave some money go for standard in that size i have standard and they work the same as select infact i like my standard bout as it has loads of caracter.

I'm assuming he's talking about 2 cm

:scared: whua, of course I was talking about 20mm.
2mm would be a bit too small for me...
But this brings me to an Idea, apply Cr2O3 to a thread and strop on it.
Might work for a travelling strop

Tony Miller should get on this. I can just see it now: "Use a pasted leather string for the finest edge. Hard wool felt version coming soon."

well i got the coticle earlyer this morning (postman came at 6.15 becouse i asked so, nice service) so after work i came home, got dressed and got to work.

the stone i got was not a selected so it had some colouring, i don't mind, adds character.
all i had to do was a touch up on my dovo special 6/8 so i washed both stones, got a bowl of water and made a dense slurry. 30 laps on that, deluted the slurry, another 25 on that.
rinsed both stone and razor for another 2x10 with just water and she slides like a dream.

amazing how being single helps you maintain a slow and steady stroke :001_huh:
