Coate's Tea Tree and Rosemary

Okay. This stuff is awesome. I know this isn't made anymore, but there are a few places on the bay where it can be purchased. I bought a tub of it and it is classified as a cream, but it has the consistency of a croap. After my first two passes (WTG and XTG) I almost didn't need a third for my ATG pass. The lather is slick, protective, and creamy. As for the scent, my nose detects more rosemary than tea tree. But you don't smell like a Thanksgiving turkey when using it. It is a clean and refreshing scent.

I am sure there are only a few tubs left, so if you have the desire and opportunity, I recommend you pull the trigger on this cream. My guess is that you won't be disappointed.

If you really like this and want some, there is a thread here re: Coates creams and if you read that you'll find out where you can buy some. A guy is selling small tubes of various scents including the tea tree variety. I've tried several of his supply and all are very good.

The limited edition came out in 2010 as a short-lived venture by the Gentleman's Shop. Many reviews were very negative due to the extreme irritation and burning it caused, but I guess you're one of the lucky ones who wasn't affected. It doesn't have parabens so the consistency is variable. I have the original formula Coate's (which are older but in much better condition than the LE) and need to get a LE to see if it's anything like the original Tea Tree.

I'm on a streak of killing threads with my posts for some reason.
I managed to find a post from someone pointing out a sale at Fendrihan.com for the Coate's LE for $3.89 a tub due to their dehydration, so I ordered two of them and will be curious to find out how they perform.

I'd like to know too since you also own the older version. I have this product and like it, and have read lots of positive reviews. The negative ones seem to be more related to irritation issues than performance. So if you don't have the irritation issues, then you may have found some more good Coates. I almost bought some from that Fendrihan sale too, but have far too much on hand right now.

I think mine is one of those. The consistency is more like a croap than a cream. Still, it performs flawlessly!

I got my two tubs in today and they are definitely dehydrated and rock solid. I'll need to run some more tests but I did run a small test shave comparison with the LE and an equally dehydrated original Tea Tree as a good basis for comparison.
Scent: the LE is definitely stronger on the Rosemary and smells very little like the original Tea Tree, but it has a pleasant scent nonetheless although I much prefer the original tea tree. And not surprisingly the scent is weak due to dehydration.
Lather: I loaded both as a soap but for each it took 3 seconds max to explode in lather that I had to transfer to my face and continue to build to a really thick and rich cream. They're both really crazy lather performers and also fairly similar--which isn't surprising given how many essential ingredients they share.
Shave: Both give very smooth and close shaves that I just can't get with every cream or soap, and while I didn't prep very well they still were awesome performers. It reminds me of one time I forgot my brush in a hurry and I made a pitiful lather with just my fingers, and yet I still got one of my best shaves up to that point.
Post-shave: The LE does give me a little irritation (nothing to be scared of), but did leave my skin feeling soft and smooth just like the original tea tree.

I remember when this cream came out. It was really loose. We were told that it should "settle a bit" with some time, but it really settled. The cream dehydrated rather quickly, but this did not affect the efficacy of the product. I still prefer the original Tea Tree from Coates. For some reason, the LE just gave me a bit of irritation.

That's odd about settling, I thought they could just use less water to begin with or something.
I can still feel the slight irritation of the LE linger after an hour, so I also very much prefer the original formula Coate's

I think at the time there was a discussion of the production company actually "curing" the cream. Everyone was in such a rush to buy the product, that it did not get the proper setup time. Of course that was all talk back in the day. I was surprised how much it did dry out, and how quickly it went about doing it.

Mine is defintiely a croap, not a cream or even a hard cream. Always has been like that even when I first got it which was somewhere between 18 months and two years ago. As for scent it's hard for me to say because I did an odd thing. II had a small sample of Trumpers rose soap and the container broke. I didn't want to throw it away. So without thinking about it very much I just opened my Coates container and dumped it in there thinking I would use in the next day or two. Then I put the Coats away and forgot about long enough for that little bit of rose to harden up some. Finally instead of scraping off I just wet the whole thing and swirled my brush on it. The more I swirled the more the rose mixed in with the top of the Coates. It even took on a little pinkish hue. So now I've got a tub of Coates LE with the usual rosemary and tea tree scent along with a little hint of rose.

Well, I can't compare it to older iterations of Coate's cream. Thanks for sharing your insights on how it compares to the older variation of the cream. I personally dig the Tea Tree & Rosemary. I think it performs wonderfully and I think having it the consistancy of a croap may even make it last longer......Yeah, I know. But I keep telling myself that anyway.
