Castle Forbes: Lathers by itself

Seriously this stuff just lathers by itself. It requires basically ZERO effort. I do not know why this "cream" (it's more of a soap, which IMO is a good thing) is not recommended more for newbies. :confused1 So many new wetshavers have lather issues and really it is impossible not to get great lather from Castle Forbes....quickly too.

I really also do not understand why it is seen as such an expensive product. You can have it for $30 shipped I believe from shaving.ie and the jar is HUGE and VERY concentrated. I'm guessing this should last for more than a year if used exclusively everyday. To me it is a MUCH better value than other popular creams that are recommended to newbies way more often (TOBS, Trumpers, Proroso).

Thirty dollars is, relatively, a lot of money for someone who is new to wetshaving and may not know what he likes yet. Plus, he's in it to save money!

If it was me, I'd recommend a tube cream for a new wet shaver. that is what was recommended to me and think it was the right recommendation. Proraso, Kiss My Face, Real Shave Company. All were available locally, all under $10 and all performed great.

TOBS is another great one. about $12, easy to use and very easy to lather.

the problem with CF is it is a bit more expensive and even though it lasts a long time, newer people may not wan to shell out $30 for a cream, on top of all the other start up costs. i'd buy a $10 cream and put the extra $20 into a better brush. also, CF only comes in 2 scents and they are both very strong (to my nose) and it may put off a new wet shaver, used to canned goo.

and although a labelled a Cream, it does perform more like a soap in the consistancy of it and loading it. i find people generally have better results, early on, with a soft cream.

All good points above. I also want to add that Castle Forbes, unfortunately, has never had the popularity of the 3Ts among novices. Is it because of the high price point? Maybe, I do not know. But what I know for sure is that it's a real pity, CF is the finest of all British creams IMHO.

lmao...

If I had to spend $30 on cream at the beginning I've been very skeptical, I havent tried CF personally but I know that $6 for an Omega cream is pretty darn reasonable and considering it's a great performer, that should be a cream recommended it to noobs along with of course Proraso.

Oh, I just used JM Fraser's today and it's a great performer, you get a lot of product for little money and it lathers super easy as well.

I personally found CF underperforms at the price point its at.

I would reccomend Trumpers for newbies as it overperforms at its price point.

Castle Forbes is available in a travel size, 50ml, WCS has it for 16$. So I think you could make the case for a newbie to start with one of the best on the market. Especially since a little goes along way making it good value for the money.

Isn't strange how we have different experiences with various shaving products. I use the following creams on regular rotation,
Trumpers, TOBS, Simpsons, DR Harris, Fitjar and Crabtree and Evelyn. I recently bought my first jar of CF and have used it for around six or seven shaves and to be honest I can't see what all the fuss is about. Don't get me wrong it's a nice cream but I don't find it any better than any of my other creams particularly bearing in mind the price. I'm going into London next week and am planning to purchase a jar of Santa Maria Novella cream, another expensive cream which I hope lives up to it's reputation.
If we are talking about value Proraso or TOBS represent much better value, in my opinion.

Okay I can get YMMV but how does Proraso represent better value? Suppose one is a wetshaver for the rest of his life so will always need a cream or soap. A Proraso tube lasted me about 3 months? Castle Forbes lets say lasts a year...I think it easily should. You'd need 4 Proraso's then and at like $7 a pop thats $28. Same price as CF.

How long does Proraso last for you guys? Maybe that's the problem in my calculation.

I wholeheartedly concur my friend. Castle Forbes is the only shave cream I consistently repurchase. The lavender is wonderful.

Here's what I got in the mail today. $30 delivered to my door... Probably a 2~3 year supply. Yep $30 is not a lot of money. :biggrin1:
I bought the Arko after a reaction with Cella and Momma Bears. First shave with the regular went great. Lather just explodes in the bowl, stayed moist through a 4 pass shave with great cushioning and glide. Unlike the two hard soaps I tried, no negative reaction.

BTW... I only have moderately priced badger brushes and regular city water with no softener. I've only been building my own lather for a few weeks and aside from the first try with the brush too wet, I've never had any trouble building whipped-cream like lather with nice peaks. So far with Proraso, Cella, Mama Bears and Arko... Have I only tried the "easy stuff"?

I think that CF Lavender is the finest lavender shaving product on the market. The scent is magnificent and the performance is outstanding. I have always maintained that it is a good value as well as the OP says.

Doug

CF is fairly pricey, but the oils used are awesome, the lime scent is the best of any product, IMHO, and the performance is top notch.

That said, Prorasso provides awesome performance and a very fresh scent at a bargain price.

As is my usual advice, I say:

Buy 'em both.
