canvas question

i have several strops all having canvas backs. one is a vintage red imp. the canvas on this strop is extremely rigid compared to the backing on my other strops. is this a better canvas? it almost seems like it would be too stiff, and i have not tried it being afraid of damage. am i worrying over nothing?

I don't know if it's better or worse. My Kanayama has a "rough" canvas side and I did not see any difference. I've been using it for ~6 months daily now...

Agree with Luc - I use my Kanayama linen daily and it feels pretty rough to the touch.
Trust me, you could do 1000 laps daily for decades and you would not see any significant damage to the razor over time. Just be careful when stropping and focus on technique!

Most vintage canvas strops were loaded with chalk and are as stiff as a board. The kanayamara will not harm your razor. The idea is no have nice knobby weave.

Does it have a sheen or a plastic feel to it? Some canvas strops have some kind of sealant or protective coating and that can make your strop stiff. I sand that off.

this is actually a strop a got from a barber who cut my hair as a kid (im 54). the canvas is just extremely hard and stiff, even though i cleaned and scrubbed all the gunk off that had accumulated after its retirement when the shop stopped doing shaves 30 or so years back. it just seems to be very abrasive to the touch, stiff as hell, and i dont want to risk ruining an edge. so i just figured i would ask if canvas in this shape is common before i gave it a whirl. its in very good condition, just feels a bit rough.
