C&E Sienna Soap...meh

I picked this up a few weeks ago because I love the scent of the cologne. However, I have not gotten good lather from this soap at all. No matter what I do I just can't get my brush loaded with enough soap for more than one, maybe two passes. Anyone else have a similar problem, and if so how'd you fix it?

I'd try soaking the brush, then shaking most of the water out of it so it's fairly dry. Then really load the brush and gradually adding some water until you get the right amount.

First, do you bowl or face lather? I have done both with this and find that I had good success. Here's what I do.

Face lathering
1) Put hot water on the puck, enough to cover the whole top.
2) Soak brush.
3) Shower.
4) Squeeze out brush.
5) Dump water off top of soap.
6) Swirl about 25 times in both directions on soap until it starts to make lather and the brush is really loaded.
7) Wet face with a lot of water.
8) Lather on face.

Bowl lathering (scuttle)
1) Put hot water on the puck, enough to cover the whole top.
2) Fill scuttle and soak brush.
3) Shower.
4) Squeeze out brush.
5) Dump water out of scuttle and refill outer bowl.
6) Dump water from top of soap into scuttle.
7) Swirl about 25 times in both directions on soap until it starts to make lather and the brush is really loaded.
7) Go to make lather in scuttle.
8) Lather.

This seems to work for me. Good luck!

What TChewy said.
I put hot water on the puck for about one minute, dump it out, shake the brush, then swirl for maybe 30 seconds (I use a Rooney Heritage Stubby 2) and find it to be a fine lathering soap; the Rooney will hold enough soap for 3-4 passes; I just dip the tips of the brush with a little water for each pass. And this is face lathering. Maybe you need a stiffer brush.

I treat it like Williams.

- soak the puck in hot water to soften it
- lather right on the puck
- I get tons of great lather
- who cares if I use more soap this way, the damn puck is so hard it will last well into the next decade anyways..

(I have mine in a larger glass bowl.. using their wooden bowl would probably be very messy using my method.. but I'm convinced that the "loading brush" method just doesn't work very well with C&E soaps, and that they use those silly wooden bowls just for looks and to get men to spend more $$ - I need room to work man!!)

I also get good lather from the Sienna. I soak the brush and the cake for a few minutes, then pour the water off the cake into my scuttle. After working a bit of soap onto the brush, I whip up the lather. Haven't had any problems with it.

My associated equipment is a DB 1.5 and a large Rooney Beehive.

They did not have the wood bowls when I got my puck. So I fill my sink with hot water, throw my brush and the whole puck in. Then I shower. When I get done I shake the brush and go after the puck on all sides. It loads very quickly. When I am done I rinse the puck, set it in the soap dish to dry, then when it is dry I wrap it back in the paper and put it in the box for storage.

I face lather. I'll try this the next time I shave. Thanks for the advice everyone!

i never get a great lather from it either - its decent, but nowhere near as nice as my other soaps

C&E Sienna is one of my favorites! Works great for me.

I WANT it to work great for me, because I love the scent and it's relatively cheap compared to other "top shelf" soaps. Even with the wooden bowl I think I got it for less than $20 bucks. I'd just like to get a thicker lather with it is all.

I face lather. What works for me is this:

1. Put a little hot water on the puck while you shower, then pour it off.

2. Use a boar brush, soaked in hot water and shaken hard 4 or 5 times.

3. Spend at least 30 seconds swirling the brush on the puck. Push kinda hard. You want to load it up good. It won't look like lather yet. More like thick whipped cream.

4. Apply to wet face. Work it in good. It will still be way too thick. That's okay.

5. Dip the tip of the brush in hot water. Work the water into your lather, right on your face.

6. Repeat #5 until the lather is good.

Good luck!

I get decent lather, but it seems to irritate my skin. I do, however, LOVE the scent. In terms of scent, I'd give it a 10! In fact, I want to get the cologne to go with it eventually.

To help with the lather and tone down the irritation, I usually make it into a super lather (I mix it with some shave cream that has almost no scent; that way it doesn't affect the sienna scent). This always yields better lather and a better shave.
