best way to clean and store razor

I was on e bay, and the seller wrote to clean the razor after every shave with soap and a toothbrush, and to store it opened up with no blade in it, because the blade rusts easily and can eat into the nickel finish. Isn't this a bit overkill?

yes.

I never took the blade out or opened it up unless it was time for a new blade.

post shave i just shook excess water off, towled it down a little and left it by the sink

I have a TTO Krona.
After each shave I open it slightly and rinse in hot water then placing the razor horizontaly with the shorter side down on edge on a dry plate still slightly opened.

I take my three-piece Merkurs apart, wipe the soap off them (don't wipe the blade) and let them dry on the bathroom counter. To store them, I put the blade back in but don't tighten it. This way all the moisture's out, the blade isn't in complete contact with the razor and I don't lose track of the blade.

I'll probably do the toothbrush thing on my open-comb periodically so stuff doesn't build up between the teeth.

Hey, it all just adds to the ritual, doesn't it?

Your blade shouldn't rust unless you are using a super crappy blade (not cheap, but crappy, i.e. not coated or not made of SS) or you leave it in for many many years in damp area. I sometimes use the same blade for a week, and don't see any rust forming. I just shake off the razor and drop it in the stand. I clean it good once in a while with scrubing bubbles.

I think each of your methods are fine. I just prefer taking the blade out and rinsing and wiping the razor dry before hanging it up on the rack. I put the blade back in its paper cover and put it in a drawer. I switch razors from day to day, but use the same blade until it's time to change blades. I know this daily ritual is overkill or anal, but it's my preference.

Well here's another quirk of mine re tto's after rinse and shake! I cut a plastic pudding cup in two and set my razor inside that half-shell and it allows only the right and left tips of the head to actually make contact. I've got this thing against sitting the bar on a flat surface to dry. Yes I could set it so the narrow end is making contact, but it's a me thing!

Thanks, Gary. Nice to know I'm not alone.

My parents always told me to remove the blade, rinse, dry, and put it back in flipped over. Of course, I never listened to my parents and here I am 28 years later, and I haven`t gone blind and my face didn`t get stuck like that.

After I shave I gently rinse all my razors in pure Himalayan water blessed by the Dali Lama, then heated to exactly 153 degrees Fahrenheit. Second, I towel them dry using only the finest French linens. Next I place the blade in a specially designed pyramid made of rare earth metals, aligned to true North. I then toss the razor in the drawer with my other razors and cutlery.

You can go blind from flipping your blade? :biggrin1:

im using exactly same method like Randy .
i like that way.

I simply rinse, shake and hang to dry. I'll clean mine with a shot of scrubbing bubbles every other blade change or so just to keep'em shiny.

I don't take the blade out to rinse after each use.
