What's new

Becoming a SE convert, apparently.

I have a 1953 G type Schick Injector and some kind of Ever Ready flip top SE that were junk store finds. Since cleaning the things up and giving them some shaving time, I don't know if I will fool much with DEs any more. What great razors! I hate to say it but since trying these out my DEs have been gathering dust. Even my beloved sledgehammer slant sits unused.

Can't explain how but it seems they just flat work better for me than DEs. Smooth shaves, ingrowns disappearing, very little irritation so long as I don't overuse a blade. Now if I can only figure out how to shave under my nose with that SE...

It's real easy to get converted to SE's; they simply produce a superior shave. :thumbup1:

My favorite is the 1900/1901 patent, Gem Jr. Bar Razor. If you can't find one of this model, in my opinion, the quite common 1912 patent is the next best thing.

As far as the area under the nose, I find that if I go XTG from each side with the side of the razor just under the nose, I get good results.

Regards,
Tom

I almost feel like I'm cheating on my DE razors since I keep shaving with my Ever Ready and SE blades. Truth told the variety is invigorating as each type of blade offers its own unique touch to shaving.

+1, Have been using my injector 2 to 3 time a week until last week ,it's getting a well deserved rest. SE's and str8 are my go to razors

Yes, you are not alone! This morning I had another amazing SE shave, this time with a newly acquired Pal adjustable injector (my first injector shave). Before today I gave my original safety razor, a Gillette tech, a turn in the rotation. I'm a little sad to say that the DE shaves are no longer satisfying. Love my Ever Ready 1914 and Gem G-Bar. Next in line will be two other recent acquisitions - a Star 1912 and an Ever Ready 1912!

I have come across a couple of SE razors and would have purchased them, but I have only found one place to purchase blades from, a medical supply co. Where do you purchase your blades from?

I'm not surprised, that with the Renaissance of traditional wet shaving,S/E razors are getting all the love that they so rightly deserve. As Tom said, they deliver a superior shave once you get a feel for them.:001_cool:

Where I live Rite-Aid drug stores carry "Treet" blades, and Walgreens carry "Gem" blades. I'm using the Gems and they seem like pretty good blades.

+1 Million :w00t:

I keep my Merkur 1904 open comb around for use whenever I have more than 1 days worth of stubble. Otherwise I only use my G-Bar and straight razors.

If you're looking online for GEM/EverReady blades, shoebox shave shop carries 2 kinds of Gems (stainless and Blue Star), Pals and the Treets. They carry another brand called LOOK that I haven't tried yet - If I get the nerve later today I may lather up and give it a go. At .49 for 5, I don't have high expectations, but you never know.

If you're looking for Injector Blades, Ted Pellas aren't a bad choice - you can also get Chinese made Schick branded blades from Amazon. I've heard mixed reports on the modern Personna Injector blades, but folks generally seem to like the Pella and Chinese injectors.

a medical supply company!

find Ted Pella blades here -

the PTFE (teflon) coated blades are superior. Unfortunately they are sold only in quantity.

Similar blades are sold in somewhat smaller quantities by Electron Microscopy Sciences at:
http://www.emsdiasum.com/microscopy/products/preparation/blades.aspx#72003

probably also available on dbay!

I normally use the coated stainless Gem blades from Ted Pella, but I am convinced that the "Gem by Personna" blades sold at some drug stores are the same as the blade Pella sells. To my mind, these are the best choice.

Some of the carbon steel blades such as Gem Blue Stars and the Treets work well but they don't seem to hold up for as many shaves as the stainless blades.

Tom

I would be perfectly happy using any of my three GEM's, especially the fat handled one I just got over the weekend, exclusively. I really like them that much, but I'm having too much fun experimenting with the small arsenal of vintage razors and the different blades I've accumulated to stick with just one right now. Someday though, I may retire everything and stick with just the GEM's...

I have used my GEM 1912 and Featherweight and really do enjoy the shave that I get from them. But as other posters have indicated variety is the spice of life. I like rotating between my razors. But if I had to use one type only it would be a GEM unit. :001_cool:

Thank you for helping me find more than one place to buy SE blades on line. I have looked locally but came up empty.I will take another look at those SE razors this weekend.
