B&B's Official Flugelhorn Player likes to thank the mods!

Gents,

As some of you have noticed before I did, I am now Badger & Blade's Official Flugelhorn Player!

I am sure this will give just that little extra on my resume :wink2:

I want to thank the honorable mods who gave me this title, I will try to live up to your high expectations!

So, that will be roll call with bugle tomorrow at 5 a.m. :001_tongu

My daughter wants a flugelhorn. The fact that I just dropped 2G on a new trumpet doesn't seem to enter into the equation.

But flugelhorns have such a nice, warm tone! Trumpets are totally different.

Truth be told, I'd like to have a flugelhorn, myself.

I hope it was a Bach, or you wasted your money. :001_tongu

Congrats on the title, from B&B's Unofficial Tuba Player!!

EDIT: and I hope you didn't buy new!!

I think that photo is actually a bugler. If your going to embrace the Flugelhorn, really embrace it. (Live and animated shot included)

I too am a trumpet player, although a very untalented, but still playing kind of guy. When I moved back to my home town, I and 4 others started a community band which is still playing. (That was 10 years ago) We have about 35 members now, and are practicing for our anual Christmas Concert. I am sure there are lots of high school musicians out there that haven't played in 20 years. That is exactly the kind of players community bands love to recruit. If you once played an instrument, but think you couldn't possibly play or enjoy playing with a group, I encourage you to dust off the old horn and give it a go. Music is a hoby that can continue into dottage. ( we have band members in their 80's) Also, brass players need shaving skills to complement their embrochoure.

 You know, I pulled my horn out a month or two ago, as I do from time to time, while I was wearing a full goatee (mustache and all). The mustache was a nuisance, so I shaved it. Now I just have the chin part of the goat.

I would love to play in a community band. That's a great idea. Part of me wonders what would have happened if I would have pursued music in college. I was told by an instructor that I could have grabbed a scholarship from Jacksonville State, who has an incredible marching band. I went after engineering, though, only to change my major to recreation four years later.

"Used" is your friend - especially considering how much the flugel gets played vs. the trumpet.

You can pick up a really good Getzen flugel for less than $800. My wife bought one for my birthday for $200, but it needed some valve work (about $150 extra). Not much of a looker, but sounds like a dream . . . even when I play it.

And all trumpeters, especially professionals, should live by the following:

The flugelhorn is your friend,
the trumpet is your spouse.
Don't confuse the two of them
or you may lose your house!

I played a $2k Yamaha in a store a couple of years ago that played extremely nice. Then again, I've played a Yamaha since 9th grade, so I could be a bit partial.

The Yamaha Xeno trumpets play really well. Nearly every trumpet player I've ever met, though, plays on a vintage Bach. I've known a few who've played a Xeno and were very impressed, but not enough to switch from the Bach.
