Any cut their own hair ?

Just curious as to how many of you use electric/battery trimmer/scissors to cut your own hair rather than go to a barber shop/salon?

I just started this spring (saving $32 per visit) and never looked back. I wish I had started this much earlier. It looks as good or better than it did before, it's cheaper, and it's much more convenient. I can also keep my hair much closer to the "perfect" length.

It takes very little time to do it once you get the logistics figured out for your own head. I always thought it was only for kids/bowl cuts/crew cuts but it's not. Anyone else?

I got moves like Jagger
I buy a new set of clippers every 4-5 years. Saving enough money from haircuts to buy razors to, ummm .... well, cut hair with.

I can't seem to get the fade right on mine (still keep a military cut), so my wife does it. $20 every two weeks vs. $20 once for the clippers; as long as I don't develop CAD (Clipper Acquisition Disorder) I'll keep saving money.

Wahl 12 piece hair trimmer...set #2 clipper..go to town on my head..takes 30 minutes almost 1 handed by myself..works well once every few months

Started after barber moved and left no directions to new shop (only 1/2 mile away). A friend said he did it, he looked okay, and I've been doing it about a year now. I just use the 3/4" guard, run it until no more hair falls into the sink, and actually get some compliments

I do the top with the #8 and the rest with the #7. I'm using the Wahl kit as well. Mine also comes with a battery powered trimmer for the "edging". Generally I do it every 2 or 3 weeks and therefore there isn't so much to do.

I learned not to use it for the very front. I use scissors for that and thanks to Youtube videos I know to cut at a 45-90 degree angle using just the very tip of the scissors for a natural looking cut. Cutting hair always seemed like something best left to someone else until I actually tried it. Again, thank you Youtube! :)

I started doing mine for about 1year now and never looked back. The shaver paid of long ago and I do it myself.

Once a week I stand in the shower and run a #2 all over my head. After I'm done I turn the water on and wash it all off and down the drain. It makes the clean up a lot easier than standing in front of the mirror.

in my 20s i thought i was clever and would cut my own hair with a pair of scissors. after seeing myself in some photographs i realized i looked like some sort of street dweller so i stopped.

I have been cutting my own for years. Lots of military folks I know did/do their own. Slap a guard on it and buzz away.

I've been cutting my own hair for 20 years. I use clippers with attachments and scissors. The whole affair takes about 45 minutes, and I get the back of head and crown my looking into opposing mirrors. I'm 35, and I have a full head of thick, wavy hair - this means that it's really hard to mess it up.

I was cutting my own hair for awhile, but I could never get the fade right.

How do you guys go about the neckline in the back?

Practice.

I haven't paid for a haircut since the barber raised his price by a dollar and I got scared I'd forget to tip him the next time.

Oh, and I went bald on top, and he was still charging me full price for half a cut.

Get a hand mirror and practice.

I can fade around my ears and neck pretty well now.

Since I stopped shaving my head though it seems like I need a trim every week now.

I asked Santa for a fancy set of professional clippers I read about on B&B. Oster 76 I think.

I don't fade mine (if I understand the term "fade" correctly). It can be done however. You just start with a small guard and pull it out a bit more from the head as you go up.

I have hair that is a little longer than some who use guards (I use # 7 and #8) and I just edge or block in the back but don't fade it. You just have to use two mirrors (stand in front of one and hold one) and a little caution and practice.

I've cut hair for myself, my boys, and sometimes help even out my wife and stepdaughter's hair. I generally use clippers for everybody else, but I used my KB Extra 5/8 Full Hollow to shave the back of my neck yesterday. I was kinda spooked about it at first, but it was a breeze.

I did that before shaving my head. It was a nice, even buzz cut. Then the hair kept receding and the fateful and fun day came when I shaved it all off. I've had no regrets since. So get ready for that day, Seattleshaver.

My barber was great. He cut my hair how he thought it'd look good, which was a #3 with clippers on the sides, then scissor cut on the top, which was over an inch long. I bought a pair of clippers a couple weeks after he moved to Florida to retire, and I've been cutting my own hair for two and a half years. I use a #3 on the sides, with a #8 on the top. That's a 5/8" difference, but I can blend it with a #5 or a #6, and after a day or two's showers, it's hardly noticeable that there's any sort of a corner. My girlfriend doesn't like that I cut my own hair, because she LOVED how my hair looked when my barber cut it, and I can't get the top to be any longer than 1" with clippers. I've saved a couple hundred dollars already, plus I've cut some of the other kids hair in my dorm to save them money too.

Wow. I just did a quick calculation. One and a half years, at getting a hair cut at about 5 weeks, costing $15 per haircut (with tip) came out to approximately $234 saved. $195 if it was every 6 weeks. For the $20 for the clippers, that's great!

If anybody is on the fence about doing it, it's a cheap investment that will pay for itself in two sessions. Then you can choose to do it or not after a couple months and go from there without costing any extra money.

I also recommend getting the corded kind of clippers, with no battery unplugged option. My mom had one of those and it didn't have very much power, and in a couple years, the battery stopped holding any charge. It could be used when plugged in, but it never was the same once the battery started to lose its juice.

I don't do it since my hair is 1,5 - 2 inches long and I usually style it.
I go to a salon and I really like how my hair dresser cuts my hair.

I really could not achieve the same results with a clipper.,and cutting my own hair with scissors equals calling for a disaster :p
