Semouge Estandar Boar

Black Friday has come and gone. I waited to see it this Semouge Estandar might have a discount. It did not and I ordered it anyway.

Amazon.ca

I was all over the net to try to find specs for this brush with no luck. Very frustrating. Going by the photo it should be at least a 26mm I might be able to live with that but less than 26mm and I’ll return it. I like big brushes 28+mm because they are very comfortable in lathering. Since every shave is a face and head shave I need plenty of lather and big brushes load appropriately.

I have been extremely happy with the performance of my Zenith Boar B35-31x57mm. I purchased it in October 2021. So in three years with exclusive use it has had less than three hundred shaves on it. A years use for a daily shaver. Since it is used once a week it has a chance to dry out completely and I run a comb through it to keep the knot pristine in looks and performance. (I also sniff brushes 🤪) A few months back it started to shed a single hair about every third or fourth shave. Not a problem but a slight unwanted distraction. The Chubby B27-28-55mm had started to shed a little more prolifically in its last few shaves just before I switched to The Big One. This week I will use the chubby and if it sheds a lot, it’s gone.

I have enjoyed using these two Zenith’s because they have fine bristles and dense knots. I purchased the Semouge Estandar because it is a premium priced brush, looks big, and Semouge’s reputation with their SOC brushes. The handle also looks very comfortable. It is also considerably cheaper $71.08, $86.08 Cnd. delivered, compared to $130.00 Cnd. plus shipping duty, and taxes, for the Zenith which would move it closer to two hundred. I also wanted to try another premium boar other than a Zenith which has been my only experience with boar brushes in this price category. I have had smaller boars like the Jade and a few boar knots that I had set into handles. The smaller brushes south of 28mm were too small, and just didn’t do it for me.

The Semouge (and I hope it’s big) will be here into first week of December.

That’s an SOC. 24mm x 55mm. My very favorite brush.

If you want something bigger, look at a Semogue Pegasus (26.5mm), or one of the Semogue Asylum brushes from Bullgoose, which has the same knot as the Pegasus.

The largest Semogue boar IIRC is the Pegasus C7 with 26.5mm knot. Retail price is usually around $60.

I'm not familiar with the Estandar name, but that one you linked looks to have the SOC Taj handle. The SOC brushes are usually 24mm.

Edit: looks like @1e4 has posted similar info around the same time.

Thanks for your reply. I’ll wait until I have it in my hand. If I like the density and flare of the knot, I could possibly keep it. I haven’t used a 24mm in a long time, most likely I will return it.

Looks like the SOC Taj, which is a very nice brush with more modest proportions but very user friendly once broken in. I’ve been using the B35, very nice, big, plush knot right out of the gate. Hope the Semogue works out for you!

I’ll see how the handle feels in my hand. If the knot is dense and I like the flare maybe but I really don’t care for smaller knots. I consider anything under 26mm small.

Never heard of a Semogue ‘Estandar’ either, but how about €40.65 ($42.35) for a Pegasus C7 in Premium Boar?

Vintage Scent in Portugal call themselves ‘The First and Original Semogue Shaving Brushes online shop’ and have attractive prices, including for the Pegasus C7 Premium Boar, Mistura, Synthetic, and Finest Badger.
They ship quite fast, prices and quality are excellent; if anything, their (European relaxed style 🧘 ) comms could be bit more responsive.

I just got a Pegasus C7 Premium Boar and a Pegasus C7 Synthetic, but did not pick the badger version as I already got a ‘2023 Barbear Português Limited Edition’ Selected Silvertip in my den that is similar to the Pegasus C7 Finest Badger.

Thruth be told, I was curious about the Semogue synthetic and at that time Vintage Scent had a special discount if you bought two. So I added the Pegasus C7 Premium Boar to my order.

I am quite fond of Semogue; their brushes work very well for me and IMO they punch way over their price point.

I've found some pretty good discounts on the more expensive Semogues like the SOC Finest and SOC MIstura, just by waiting for sales, Black Friday, etc. Have not tried Vintage Scent, yet.

I checked their site out yesterday and there weren’t any sales of interest to me.

Handsome brush!! Looking forward to your review!! :popc::popc:
I want to have the handle in my hand to ascertain comfort and function. I haven’t used a 24mm brush in quite a few years. If I find the knot to be too airy I doubt very much I’ll even try it out, just return it as they honour a return policy into January. If that is the case I’m hoping that they would be willing to allow a trade up to one of their 26.5 mm boars. I will use my 28mm boar brush for today’s shave to see how I like a step down from my regular 31mm boar. What can I say, I like and prefer large brushes. I would be surprised if I wanted to keep the 24mm. The high praise for Semogue SOC brushes has always been a curiosity of mine. Just as the praise for the Jade was which I sold shortly after it was broken in.
