Wolfman 0.75

Hello Gents!

I don’t normally post reviews because there are many of you here who have far more experience and are much better describing your experience. I was also initially hesitant to create another Wolfman thread, but I thought my experience using the Wolfman 0.75 WR2 deserved its own topic because I have noticed a dearth of reviews on the WR2 0.75. Hopefully this post will be informative for everyone interested in Wolfman and more importantly for people who may not be considering the 0.75 or are on the fence with their chosen gap.

Background: Since I had my first Wolfman experience in April 2021, I have tried many of the WR2 gaps and a couple WR1 gaps. My beard growth is slow, light and scant at best. Many of you have more facial hair in 24 hours than I will in a month. I have a mop of hair on my head that grows into a flourishing bush in an instant, but my facial hair is the complete opposite.

WHAT: Wolfman WR2 0.95 vs WR2 0.75

Like many of you I was recommended to start my Wolfman oddessy with the WR2 1.25–a razor that’s smooth like butta, but after using the razor for more than a year I found myself being drawn to milder razors with minimal blade feel.

Having both a WR2 0.95 and recently acquiring a WR2 0.75, I feel reasonably assured that I can compare the two. The WR2 0.75 has vanquished RAD, I no longer have any desire to try other razors. For me, the WR2 0.75 is vastly more comfortable without losing much efficiency. I can easily use the WR2 0.75 on autopilot, but I have to use a little more care with the WR2 0.95. Neither razor is aggressive but the blade feel is more present on the WR2 0.95. The WR2 0.75 blade feel is significantly reduced. Both razors operate optimally with a shallow to neutral shave angle, but neither razor requires a mindfulness for the angle to get a fabulous shave. The WR2 0.95 gives me a hair closer shave, particularly on my neck, but the difference is not significant. For me, the WR2 0.75 is the perfect razor. The WR2 0.75 shaves very similarly to the WR2 0.95 but more comfortably. Whichever you choose both razors are excellent. Hope this helps someone who’s ready to choose a Wolfman for themselves!

If you have the Wolfman WR2 0.95 and particularly the WR2 0.75 please feel free to add your comments and experiences.

SIDE NOTE #1: After using Feather blades for dozens of shaves, my face does not enjoy Feather blades, but I really really wanted to love them. What blades do you all like in the WR2 0.75 and WR2 0.95??

SIDE NOTE #2: I’m thrilled I chose bronze for the WR2 0.75, I enjoy the polishing experience maintaining the razor I have…polishing is cathartic and I enjoy returning the shine to the razor.

my go to in the 0.95 is a Personna Med Prep or a Gillette Nacet.

I don't have a funny description.
I made the same mistake, beginning from a higher gap. I think that 0.75 would be just about right for me. Or, if there is such a thing as 0.85.

This is another thread that discusses the smaller gap Wolfmans..... I enjoy this thread already and learned quite a bit from this one:

Thanks for posting this, @Latherati, and for the private message you sent me to share your thoughts. I’ve always been curious about the 0.75 gap since I had such a good experience with my 0.95, and found it to be so efficient. It seemed to me we should be trying smaller gap WR2s rather than chasing larger gaps on an already very efficient 0.95mm razor. But so few people have the 0.75 and those who do rarely go into detail.

I put myself back on the waiting list a week or two ago and you’ve given me the prompt I needed to try a 0.75 after all my vacillating.

Nice review, Kirk! So glad you finally found the RAD killer. Now just sit back and enjoy.

Weren’t Perma-Sharps a good fit for you?
Yes! Permasharps are my number 1 blade! I can use Feathers, but after using Permasharps I realized they weren’t very comfortable. They make my face burn for about an hour after—not unbearably so, but Permasharps are more comfortable.

@Space_Cadet Both the WR2 0.75 & 0.85 are custom orders that you can request from Tara when you make your order. I have not tried the 0.85.

No reason to experience razor burn; if the Feathers lack comfort, I wouldn’t use them Kirk. You may want to hunt for some Vintage Gillette Spoilers - really long-lasting, comfy blades.

I have a .85 and love it. As long as you keep a fairly shallow angle it does a great job. One of my favourite razors.

For blades I’ve used a variety with no issues. My favorites have been Nacets and Astra SPs (although I should note these are the older Russian-made ones - I have no experience with the new Nacets or Astras).

@Latherati - not many people have the 0.75 gap so I appreciate your review. A couple questions for you:
1) Do you shave ATG with the 0.75 and are you able to achieve BBS?
2) In terms of efficiency, how do you compare it to the Overlander? (I think you have that razor as well).

I have the 0.75 and 0.95 as well.

@catchacoolbreeze Before answering your questions I will mention I have very slow, light growth.

1) Do you shave ATG with the 0.75 and are you able to achieve BBS?
Yes, I do a two pass shave (usually, sometimes only one pass). The first pass is always ATG on the neck followed by a second WTG pass on the cheeks, mustache and jawline. I use Perma-Sharp blades for 95% of my shaves (occasionally Astra Green or Nacet). The WR2 0.75 is the easiest , most comfortable razor to achieve BBS. All the razors I now have achieve BBS, but the WR2 0.75 does it slightly more comfortably.

2) In terms of efficiency, how do you compare it to the Overlander? (I think you have that razor as well). I have the WR2 0.75, WR2 0.95 (neither Wolfman are going anywhere), Lambda Athena titanium, and Overlander SS. The WR2 0.75 and Lambda Athena get the most use, but I grab for the WR2 0.75 more because it’s so comfortable and an autopilot razor for me.

YMMV, but for me the WR2 0.75 and Overlander are extremely similar, but the WR2 0.75 is the slightest more efficient and a little more smooth. I love and use both, but I grab the WR2 far more often because I love its polish, it’s pretty!!! More importantly the Darwin handle is my most favorite handle to use—the WR2 0.75 was the most recent razor I added to my den and it immediately became my favorite. The other razors had to go because the 0.75 became the Alpha and had no intention of sharing den space.

@catchacoolbreeze if you have both Wolfman WR2 0.75 & 0.95 which do you prefer and why??

Hope this helps!

I appreciate your comments (as well as the light growth disclaimer in the beginning).

I got the 0.95 way back in the day when it was really considered the “standard” gap. It is a very smooth gap for me but it is not an autopilot razor. I can sometimes bite myself with it if not paying attention. I enjoyed it a lot when I was only shaving wtg/xtg. I was never able to go atg with it and got a lot of tugging and weepers. I should put it on the BST but haven't gotten around to it.

My beard is thick and runs pretty flat against my face and neck vs. most guys that just have fat growth on the neck. Guys with high-gap wolfmans run them pretty steep and that is a big no-no for me as the blade just tugs and tugs. I like my blade angle to be like a straight razor (relatively flat) so I shave neutral to shallow with DEs. Combined with milder razors, I surmised that I could go shallow without the additional aggressiveness that that usually entails as the safety-bar would be actually useful and would push down any plump of skin that the head is pushing up. This has proven successful with my Overlander and I can get dolphin smooth BBS with it.

However, like you say, the looks of the WR2 are top notch. I love the shape of it, the polish, and the balance. The titanium WRH1 in 90mm with steel head is the perfect balance and feel of a razor for me. I got the 0.75 to see if it could top my Overlander. At this moment, I am not sure if it has. It is a very smooth razor for sure. I like it much better than the 0.95. I do not see a drastic difference in efficiency and I can shave everyday with it, without issue. No matter how smooth the 0.95 is – after 2 days, I can feel the roughness. I can also go ATG without issue with the 0.75. That being said, I cannot yet achieve BBS. The blade just doesn’t reach my skin! I also tried shaving my head with it (thinner hair) and I can’t get BBS their either. With the Overlander, I can. There are not many of these out there with guys reporting back on the forums, but the guys that do, report they can get BBS. I don’t know if it’s a manufacturing tolerance thing or just that my hair lies flat, that makes it more tricky.

TLDR – the 0.75 beats the 0.95 in every way, but it doesn’t beat my Overlander. I bit the bullet and ordered a dual gap 0.80/0.85 to see if I can find the perfect gap. Not sure if that is a fools errand. I also tried the Athena, it was so much more aggressive to me, it is what I imagine a 1.55 gap would feel like. I hated it.

@catchacoolbreeze Awesome feedback on the diffferent experiences you have had using the WR2 0.75 and WR2 0.95. I too prefer a shallow shave angle. I am assuming you have used a variety of blades in each WR2 so you can rule out blades being your issue. The WR2 0.95 didn’t gel with me at first but thanks to @Hannah's Dad I figured out I was using a blade that was far too sharp for my skin type. Once I started using Perma Sharps, the WR2 0.95 became an awesome razor, but can’t overtake the WR2 0.75 for comfort. The WR2 0.95 does very occasionally bite, and is a little too aggressive on the upper lip, so it’s not completely autopilot like the WR2 0.75. I cannot use the WR2 0.95 on successive days in part because there isn’t enough growth. I too have not experienced a drastic difference in efficiency between the WR2 0.75 & WR2 0.95…very similar shaves, but the WR2 0.75 is ultra comfortable.

Maybe I missed it, but can you use the Overlander ATG?? Sounds like the Overlander is your dream razor. If it were me I would use the Overlander, enjoy my shaves and smile. Done. If you wanted a shiny, polished Overlander I suppose you could send the razor to Back Roads Gold for a polish too. Just my opinion. I had a WR2 1.55 SS for a very short time, a 1-pass marvel, but far too efficient for my needs.

I agree. The 0.75 gives much more comfort than the little bit it trades off in inefficiency over the 0.95.

I can achieve bbs with the Overlander. If the new plate doesn't work out for me, I am probably done with Wolfman and just use them for the handles. However, the wr1 in 0.48 looks interesting - but it suffers the same as the 0.75 - not enough user information on it to see how it fairs against other razors. The Blutt also looks interesting to me as people say it shaves shallow and is rigid.

Sorry to find this thread so late but yes WR2 0.75 is the GOAT. the WR2 already have a unique feel but the 0.75 gives BBS with zero blade feel and I can buff for as long as I want without razor burn. And it's still efficient somehow.

Ridiculous razor. Have been telling others about it but the low blade gap isn't usually taken seriously. There's a youtuber by the name of "sugrrr daddy" or something that likes the mild Wolfman razors too.

If you like the 0.75 I can also recommend you the Wolfman WR4 in the mildest setting .30mm. Then throw a KaI Captain Titan Protouch MG blade in there and thank me later. The kai blades are mild but still gives me a close shave. The beauty of the WR4 is you can get blades of various aggression. So it's almost an adjustable. Feather Professional blades will still be mild but give you a more neutral blades exposure. And if you want more you can get the Feather Pro Supers.

This peaks my mind because I absolutely love my titanium WR2 in .75 due to how autopilot it is. I can get my son to sleep and go do an autopilot shave and go to bed. I have been contemplating either the .30 WR4 or the .48 WR1 when my place in line pops back up. The only thing that makes me nervous is the amount of people that say the WR4 head in titanium is to light. However, I enjoy my titanium vector and that has to lighter than the wr4 head.
