A question about prices...

So, I found this place in my town (Charlottesville, VA) called Londons Bathecary and they sell literally every shaving product imaginable. I'm talking Geo F. Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Truefitt and Hill, Floris, L'Occitane, MWF, Crabtree & Evelyn Col. Conk, and the list goes on. Before anyone starts drooling, I think I should mention that the prices seem exorbitantly high on some products. I just want to post some prices of their products and ask you all if you think it is worth buying there or ordering online. Here is the list:

Geo F. Trumper: SC tubs: $30, SC tubes: $18
Truefitt and Hill: SC tubs: $30, SC tubes: $18
TOBS: SC tubs: $20, SC tubes: $11
L'Occitane Cade Soap refill $10
Col. Conk Refill (Lime, Amber, Almond) $3.50
MWF: Soap + Ceramic bowl $70 (this seemed exorbitant), Soap Refill $20
...that's all I can remember for now.

I will say that I got a tube of T&H Sandalwood for $10.50 on clearance.

What do you guys think? Too expensive? Worth it? I don't know, I've only been wet shaving since April. Any feedback would be amazing.

I can't speak for all of these because I don't own some of them and therefore have no frame of reference, but $70 for MWF... even IN the ceramic jar, is sheer highway robbery. As for the rest, why don't you add them to the cart of a preferred online vendor to see your grand total with tax/shipping/etc. Weigh those numbers against what these fellows charge plus their tax rate.

$70 for MWF with the ceramic bowl? That's ridiculous. It should be half that price, or cheaper.

The Col. Conk refills are about what you'd expect, and the Cade refill is also $10 at L'Occitane stores, but just about everything else you listed can be found cheaper elsewhere.

For comparison's sake, QED has trumper SC tubes at $14, bullgoose has TOBS tubs at $13.50, and west coast shaving has MWF refills at $13. That's three different products from three different online vendors, all cheaper than the store you've found. You can decide whether it's worth it to have the convenience of being able to buy locally, though.

The others seem inline. Expecially for a brick and morter place. Remember they have to pay rent and there is no waiting. Sounds like a good place to visit.

High price or not, I'd be there every other day, intending to just look and drool and smell and feel the heft of a desired brush, not intending to buy a thing. And then I'd walk out with a dazed feeling and asking myself, "How did I end up spending that much on impulse?!?" And repeating the process, as necessary........

I just saw MWF in bowl for $68 at a shop in Idaho. My hunch is that's around MSRP for that one, imported. Of course, it can be had for much cheaper, well, almost anywhere.

there was a thread floating around somewhere recently that claimed mwf could be found in the ceramic dish for $26 shipped.

Maybe a little high until you factor in shipping; but the ability to have impulse AD with out the wait, priceless!:lol:
I'd love to have the opportunity to purchase locally at a physical store.

+1
With the competitive pricing available online, it's easy to forget that brick and mortar stores have to charge more to cover costs. I think it's nice to have a shop you can check out, rather than just an office/warehouse housed in a storage space. But I'm not preaching; I end up buying most of my gear online because of availability and a tight budget.

Cade and Conk locally available, I envy you:thumbup1:

I'm certainly no expert (see post count) but other than the MWF and bowl most the other stuff seems in line for a B&M store. We have a C.O. Bigelow's in town and I'm sure I could have saved a few $$$ online but I like going in touching/smelling/getting free samples and advice. I think that is worth something.

Like everyone has pointed out, the MWF price is quite high. The rest of them seem reasonable compared to internet vendors once you include vendors. For instance, I think TOBS is around $14 at WCS, but once you include shipping it is $18-$19. Plus you get the product instantly and can smell and look which is a huge bonus. I wish I had a store like that in my area. IMHO, it is worth buying products there occasionally just to support such a rare store.

Brick and mortar cost money to rent and maintain and staff. Still, I can't even get any of those products online in Aus for those prices.

The only retail store in my town charges $35 for TOBS and $100 for a Merkur HD. I don't buy there, can't afford to. But we're lucky to even have one, and it's good for scratch n sniff purposes.

If I had such a B&M nearby, I probably would pay a little extra for some items just to support a local business while having the chance to sniff and handle the products.

yeah, on second thought, I guess those prices are actually fair and worth it for a B&M business. I do such a large proportion of my shopping online nowadays (especially for shaving gear) that I tend to forget the value of support local shops.
