What's new

A few good pics of my custom Slant

Sorry for the repeat...the other pics were taken with my phone right off the lathe...I finally had a chance to clean it up a bit....I have to admit I'm kinda stoked how this one turned out.:001_smile

Congratulations again! Masterful. How did you attach the base of the Merkur head and the internal securing mechanism to your new handle? Unbelievable.

Very nice! Do you have any plans for trying to do some ornate designs on the handles, perhaps something like the ABC razors?

Thank you sir! The vintage slant head attaches to the handle the same way as the Gillette's starting with certain Old types on up thru the New....actually the SS head attaches the same way as well. They are simply pressed together. The base of the head is pressed into the handle about 1/4 in. The trick is you must have very close tolerances and a perfectly round hole. A drill won't do it, as a standard drill is basically a triangle....also known as a three flute drill. The hole looks round, and it is....it's just not "perfectly" round. Using the lathe I machine a hole at the end of the handle to the exact depth that the razor head can be pressed in. I then press the two pieces together and machine a knob to the correct diameter and length so it "just" fits inside the handle and turns freely so it can attach to the cap. Nothing to it!:biggrin1: Thank you again for your kind words!

The easy answer is "no way"! :) My skills are limited to knurling. Those of you that have taken a look at my other handles can see that I am partial to the spiral "Barber Pole" knurl. I love my Brit Aristocrats for many reasons, one being the spiral knurling. I play with the depth and "coarseness" of the knurl, but that's about it for me. I can also do a diamond knurl and vertical grooves like a Flair Tip SS....I just prefer the Barber Pole look and feel.
Thank you Brian for the kind words!

Wow that thing's a beauty (and a beast)!
Thank you sir! It is a bit of a beast :) I do not have an accurate scale, I can only say it's pretty darn heavy! But I do make sure they are balanced so as not to feel awkward.

Looks like a really heavy razor. But I think that's what you wanted anyway. The finish is awesome!

The finish is just clean brass :) I did spray a clear coat over it and time will tell if it stays shiny! It's pretty heavy but not over the top. I really wanted a long handle with the vintage slant head....I kept the diameter about the same as the "original" and I drilled the knob/center pin as far as I could....about 2/3 of the length....I need to pick up a modest accurate scale...It's heavier than a Big Fellow, but not by all that much.

Knurling, eh? Can you make me some long 2" dumbell handles? :001_smile

Very nice!
Were you able to play with the weight and balance to get it just how you wanted it?
I have turned baseball bats for guys to suit their taste. It's a pleasure to be able to customize a tool to "perfection" for someone.
Some day I want to learn how to use a metal lathe.

Thank you! I did balance it out....nothing scientific...I just started with a big knob and kept making it smaller until it was balanced.:biggrin1:

Sweet!
That handle is ginormous.

Thanks Phil! Suddenly my Big Fellow seems small! :tongue_sm

Nice work but I think that the handle is too big. Have you shaved with it?

I don't know I've been known to make a Extra long handle myself.

It's really not too heavy or clumsy at all. I made it specifically for head shaving as the longer handle makes it easier to maintain the blade angle. The Big Fellow was the longest razor I had....it just seemed if it was a little longer it would be that much easier to control. I've used it for a week or so now and really love it! It is well balanced and feels great. Today I gave it a try on my face...again I really like it. The extra heft really seems to make the vintage slant head perform. For me it's a great combination...but I know not everyone likes a heavy razor:tongue_sm
