What's new

Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

Got my Muhle Rocca today.

Still did not shave.

First disappointment is such a thick stainless steel handle being so lightweight. It is beautiful but it is hollow. No surprise if the Chinese as Yaqi and DS Cosmetic take over the market in this stainless steel niche.

Second disappointment is only a single Muhle blade included with such a expensive razor. At least a box full of 5 or 10 blades would be nice. Are they ashamed of their own blades ?

Muhle should learn from Indians. Pearl sent me 55 blades with my Pearl Adjustable Flexi Razor.

Let's see how this thing shave, is what really matters.

Really good razor though

I picked up this Fatip Testina Gentile yesterday at a yard sale. 10 bucks. The guy said he used it twice and it wasn't for him. After paying for it I asked him if he was sure that he set the blade in right as they have wiggle room and need to be clamped down after centering. He looked at me like I was the stupid one. Oh well. A new razor for a third of the price. Not that I needed another but why not.
It's the B&B way.

Today is my birthday, and I treated myself by going to pick up my first American Button Company Pocket Edition OLD type--I believe a No. 500A. Here is the photo from the auction that got me excited:

I paid well under $100 for it and got a very old Wade & Butcher straight razor (stamped simply Wade & Butcher Sheffield) that looks to be in decent shape (along with three other straights) in the bargain. The Wade & Butcher looks like it's either a quarter hollow or a half hollow grind. I don't know enough to tell which.

Anyway, back to the ABC Pocket Edition. I was super excited to pick up. But, when I got there, I discovered that the baseplate was this atrocity:

ARGH!!! So-o-o-o-o-o-o disappointed.

After I got home, I stole an OLD type baseplate from a razor that I just got yesterday, polished it up as best as I could and swapped it in to get this:

So, now I have at least an all Gillette, ABC-ish frankenrazor that looks like this:

Anyone have an extra ABC Pocket Edition baseplate laying around needing a new home ;)? The case is quite nice inside and opens and closes very nicely. However, the outside of the case is heavily tarnished, behold:

I'm torn about what, if anything, I should do to the case. I know patina can be charming, but ... wow.

Well, I suppose that I am blessed to still be learning lessons at my age, right?
I couldn't resist cleaning up that heavily tarnished case. Here it is now:

Still looks its age, just more presentable, like after a nice shave😜

My little humble find recently on the bay. Thanks to advice from @Northstonehill who pointed me in the right direction :))

Seller was nice enough to include a free extra handle with a tad more heft.
But to try it out I paired it with my old elite razor olive wood handle.
First shave was definitely very efficient. 2 passes and a very clean shave. Nicked a tiny little pimple. But otherwise smooth. Still gotta dial in the right angle and use lighter touch. But for first shave with a nacet blade I do quite like it and see why so many people like this #160 goodwill :)

I got this one delivered today. I believe its a Milord 1947, no notch, with end caps and no date code. One side bar is missing but over-all its in nice shape. No case or blade holder but Id give the razor a 9 out of 10.

So if anyone has a gold side bar please let me know. Id like to save this razor with the shape its in.

Code on the bottom is X1 so I believe it is a 1952 Milord. No made in stamp (just the code and Gillette logo) which I saw on an old thread is something that happens. The plating is in good shape, way better than the two other gold plated razors I have.

I am excited to try this tomorrow, never used a one piece twist open razor before.

Received these two razors in the mail today. Both are quite filthy and still had Australian made Gillette blue blades in them. Both razors are Gillettes and the head of the TTO has come away from the handle. You can still open it if you hold the end caps and unscrew it that way. I have a couple razors the same as it with exactly the same problem.

This is a very exciting day because I got two packages containing the haul pictured below, which includes:
  • A 1966 L3 Slim Aristocrat in its original case with an empty Super Stainless 5-blade dispenser that is bent (and repairable). BUT, the razor in the photo is I my replated, birth quarter G3 Aristocrat. I've been looking for a case for it for months, and I finally have one. The original Aristocrat is in really nice condition with what appears to be a few marks on the doors from contact points with the case. I'll have to see whether those marks come off with cleaning or light polishing. Otherwise, that razor is immaculate. I'm somewhat likely to find a new home for the L3 Aristocrat. I don't NEED two of them.
  • A large lot of blades, some of which are new and some of which are vintage. This entire lot cost me $30 including shipping! I was attracted primarily by the Gillette Super Stainless Spoiler dispensers, but I'm genuinely interested in every blade in the lot, which includes:
    • 68 Gillette Super Stainless Spoilers that are dated in my birth year marked G1, G2, or G3 (my birth quarter). The oil between blades had dried so much that I could not slide a single blade out of any one of the dispensers. I've already corrected this issue for two of the dispensers by carefully opening them and lightly reoiling them with sewing machine oil. I counted 23 blades in those two dispensers and the other three look to be completely full (45 blades total). I cannot wait to try one of these!
    • 25 vintage Marlin High Speed blades likely made during WWII of high carbon steel. I've never used one of these blades, and I don't know much about them other than Marlin sold a bunch during WWII.
    • 3 vintage Gillette Platinum Plus injector blades (from the original 11). I love me some vintage injector goodness. The injector bayonet bears a marking of P3 (third quarter 1970?).
    • 10 vintage PAL hollow ground carbon steel blades. I've never used one, and I've heard mixed reviews about them.
    • 10 Shark blades. Don't have a ton of experience with them. I can't tell if they are new or "vintage."
    • 9 Astra SP blades. I love these blades. Again, I can't tell how old they are.
    • 10 Bolzano Superinox blades. I've never used one. New? Old? IDK
    • 50 Dorco Prime Platinum blades (definitely new-ish) about which I'm genuinely curious.
    • 85 Derby Premium blades about which I'm also mildly curious. I find the Derby Extras to be decently smooth for a shave or two.
