12K barbers hones courtesy of Whipped Dog

I got a sweet little 1"x4" Chinese 12K barbers hone from Larry for free thanks to a little facebook give away. Any suggestions on how to use this little guy? It’s real narrow so what would be the best method for making sure I get an even hone?

rolling x strokes.... use water or a drop or 4 of oil on it....

*(if you choose oil make sure and wash it with soap and water before storing it)...

the c12k's make wicked sharp edges.....

I always hone with two hands on the blade, but find it to be most important when using a narrow stone. Don't be afraid to use a bit of pressure when starting, but be sure to finish off with some light strokes. I have found that with my 2"x6", I have to do about 100 passes to get a good edge, on a 1x4 it could be 200 or more. I guess you just have to experiment and see what works for you.

I use very small elliptical circles on my c12k, with barely the weight of the blade (like zero pressure). I will typically do 2-3 sets of 50 circles up & down the hone for a total of 100-150 circles.

Now I know people sometimes reserve circles for moderate-to-heavy pressure honing, but I have found that I get killer edges by using this method...Take this with a grain of salt though, as I am still learning/experimenting myself!! :biggrin1:

I just received a Chinese 12k hone from Larry and his directions said to do different size circles on the hone for 30 seconds per side of the razor for a touch up with lather. Haven't tried it yet so YMMV but Larry certainly knows what he is doing when it comes to sharpening.

My Cnat is a good finisher, but it is slow, even though it is a huge chunk of rock. For a mini one like that... set aside some time.

I second using a little soap or lather with the water on the stone. I use a little shaving soap, but not necessarily lather. I wet a finger, rub it on the soap then apply it to the stone before starting to hone.
