Yates Merican Razor.......

What is your opinion of this razor, all things considered. It comes in 3 versions, "as machined" "bead blast" and "stonewash".

I'm looking for a moderate razor. Here's it's specs;

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Exposure: Neutral
  • Thread: 10-32
  • Total Height: 3.500"
  • Total Weight: 98g
  • Made in the USA

I'm looking for a moderate razor and afraid this maybe too mild. Those who have it, thoughts please!

I have the Merica and think it's a great razor. It's a bit difficult for me to classify in terms of "aggressiveness," but I would guess most people would classify it as " medium" (emphasis on the word guess). I have the "as machined" finish and the flag engraving. Its one of my favorite razors.

I bought the 'Merica when it was still Wet Shaving Club. It's a great razor. I have a bunch of other razors that I use because this ridiculous hobby where we need many soaps and brushes and razors and blades to experiment with and compare. The 'Merica is the best razor I have - super easy and intuitive - it is very efficient while feeling very mild. I often wonder why I don't just get rid of all the other razors and only shave with the 'Merica --- similarly I wonder why I have all these other soaps when I have enough MWF tallow to last the rest of my life.

I love Jacob Yates and all that creates for his own company and for others, he is a fabulous machinist and a top bloke. A year ago I was a huge fan of the Winning new version but outgrew it soon, moved to the Merica and it is a lovely piece of hardware but outgrew that too. The problem with The Winning and The Merica is that I often had to buff which would leave me with a ton of irritation after that.

Then I found the 921 when a friend loaned me his last week. The most efficient was the EH plate but I loved the H plate more, this is thanks to @gdawg55 who recommended it and I understand why he loves it. It is smooth, efficient and a very dependable razor even for daily shaves. This totally trumps the Merica for me, that's a personal viewpoint.

@bbobbdd, mate if you are getting the Merica, take the AS Machined, simple and effective. But I would urge you to give the 921 a think or better still get a BYOR, the H plate and top cap and a Merica Handle. To me the Merica handle is the best among the Yates handles, not a fan of the 921 handle. You can dial up or down between the M, H and EH plates. I'm guessing the Merica is like an M plate. Hope this helps buddy.

Can not say anything that has not been said already, but we do not know person who started this thread Face, Skin, or Beard to tell if the Yates is fit.

Mate, you always give us a reality check and thumbs up for that.

I think the Yates does accommodate for most needs with the Winning being mild and perfect for Newbies or those that don't like Blade feel at all, The Merica with mid aggression and efficiency which is what I guess @bbobbdd is looking for or the 921 which can be tweaked from Mid to mid high aggression.

I think that was Jacob's plan to try and address the needs of different shavers. I think most Artisan or Razor manufacturers aim for that but it isn't always perfect. I guess only through trial and error, sampling of blades and even different soaps (I'm allergic to some) etc can we really find that sweet spot in our shaving journey.

Something I used to neglect in the past was skin type and how my face feels for the rest of the day after a shave. Have learned over time to pay attention to that and to dial in to products that suit my skin right down to even blades. The idea now is to feel great after a shave and to enjoy every shave.

I love in Reality, try to keep thing simple.

Like is too complicated, try to keep it simple.

Yates is one brand most owner are fans of.

Wish they would offer Polished finish, but great Hi Polished Finish is time consuming operation.

Don't have any of their razors yet but in his video he said the as machined finish is the smoothest they have. I would choose that one based on that fact. Bead blasted finishes on my overlanders caused annoying drag and needed to be polished.

2:20 PM PST, 6\26,

Just got notice that the Merica is available to order in limited supply again....... but I just don't need it, so ALL of you buy them out.

In addition to my Fatboy(s), Slim, RCGs and Goodfellas Brass Smile Bayonetta, Flair, and one more...I just bought an 46\47 Gillette Aristocrat being replated Gold and the Silver English Version of the Aristocrat in perfect condition, So I just don't need the Merica. Oh, when will the madness stop?

Yeah Mate, I always wondered about the Polished Glossy finish for Yates but you're right it is a time consuming procedure and I guess it would hike up the cost of the Razor, we've seen that with Timeless offering the option.

Mate, I couldn't agree more. I'm a Fan of the AS Machined versions and keeping in mind the fact that it is still a few dollars less, that's even better value.

With the AS Machined, there's no stopping one from using a Dremel someday to make it all shiny, with the Bead Blasted version, that's a mountain to climb.

You have a super line up of Razors buddy. Keep the Yates BYOR or the 921 in mind though, gives you options and an entirely different shave experience from the Vintage Razors.

Humbly I have to concede that the Gillettes are Old Boys alright, but they will always be King.

I would say the ‘Merica has a bit of stiction when shaving with it. It is similar to a Henson in that regard.

Good razor and I would only get it in as machined finish.

As for having too many razors I cut back my personal den to a few hands full…
