to get REALLY good astrophotography images is VERY expensive. most folks use either a modified DSLR or a purpose designed CCD, and those start @ 2k. I'm thinking about sticking with the DSLR world. because there is more software support for Canon, I am thinking about getting one and an adapter to use my Nikon lenses, and then moving to a tube.

In that case, I think I will stick to birds and bugs for now It will be the DSLR route if I ever decide to give it a go though
