I'll add one more thing:

I think I learned much more by the goofy, almost disasterous path that I took.

This gave me the opportunity to start with a jacked bevel, set it, and work up to a pretty nice edge.

There’s nothing goofy about it, disastrous maybe. Most of us have a similar experience when we hone our first razor.
