Which scuttle to buy?

I've read some really great reviews about the best known scuttles (DB/GP/Moss/SchwarzWeiss/Becker), but I'm at a loss which one to buy. So I thought it might be a good idea to ask for some advice.

I'm looking for a scuttle that doesn't take up too much space, but in which I can still lather properly. Price isn't a real issue (with the shipping cost from USA/Canada they're all about the same price for me). I've got my eyes on a SchwarzWeissKeramik Basic and a DB Original. Anyone got experience with these scuttles? Are they well suited for lathering in the scuttle itself?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

GtP makes some phenomenal scuttles with amazing aesthetic value. I own a GtP 4 as well as a Moss. Both are awesome....can't really lather in the Moss but I knew that up front. It's more of a brush warmer....that said Sara does make larger ones for lathering as well.

Good luck in your choice!

I have a G5 and think it's beautiful but mostly a brush warmer. I went up in size to a DB 1.5, it ain't small but is perfectly sized for scuttle lathering. If size is a consideration you might consider face lathering and avoiding the scuttle/ bowl altogether, it's a popular method among many users here and I'm becoming a convert as well.

I have a large Moss and a DB 1.5. Both are terrific, but the DB 1.5 is excellent for bowl lathering. No, it isn't small, but it works very well and keeps the lather warm for an entire shave.

I have the GtP V5 and it is amazing. I originally got it for bowl lathering, which it did a great job of doing. I now face lather and use it for a brush warmer, which it also does a great job of doing. It's the only one I've tried, but I'm very happy with it.

I would pick the snazziest looking one, which is why I went with a G5!

If I was blind I would pick the DB 1.5. I would also probably not be shaving as a hobby, and almost definitely not sitting here typing to you.

heres a vote for the ansgar scuttle, i went for the xl and i have no problem with the foot print it leaves. i kinda figured unless you have a specific size requirement the ansgars realistically don't take up that much more room and they are the caddy's of the scuttle line ups.

I broke a dirty bird 1.5 last week, still pissed about it.But life goes on and I am getting tired of using a mug to make lather,so I need to buy another scuttle or a large bowl.
I really don't want to shell out the price for another DB,so If anyone knows where there is a deal out there for a scuttle,I would appreciate it.

I have a Georgetown scuttle. I had to glue rubber-baby-buggy-bumpers on the base to prevent it from further scuffing the counter top. SWMBO was not happy about that, but she likes how this ivory scuttle fits in with the decor. Ahem.

I don't have a scuttle AD so I cannot compare this one to any of the others. I used a cheap scuttle/cup/brush holder for years that I dropped. If I dropped and broke my G scuttle I would look for another, probably another ivory G scuttle, maybe some other SWMBO approved scuttle.

I like the grooves in the lather area. I like the weight of this G scuttle. I am confident handling it with wet hands. I like the cushioning of the bumpers on the unglazed base. No complaints other than almost losing my happy home when I scuffed-up the counter.

Thanks for all the info! It seems the G5 is one to reconsider... Would you guys say that the DB Original is simply to small for bowl lathering or is that a misconception on my part? I'm trying to find a modus between size (I'm not looking for an oildrum) and the capacity to lather in the scuttle itself (I'm not looking for just a brushwarmer, either). Hmmm... Choices, choices.

I've reviewed 5 different scuttles (Georgetown G5, Becker Small, Dirty Bird 1.5, Scharzimik (SP?) Small, and Moss Large) and to be honest with you I got them all to work equally well.

But if I were to sample public opinion the one that gets the fewest complaints and the most strokes is the Dirty Bird 1.5. My G5 has 6.5 ounce reservoir capacity and the DB 1.5 has about 13 ounces, and when I tested all of them for heat retention the DB 1.5 held the heat longer.

In direct answer to your question, I have read posts saying the DB Original's lathering area was too small for them.

One question to ask yourself is if you are a face latherer or bowl latherer. Face latherers do most of the work whipping it up on their faces and they are more likely to like a small scuttle to keep their brush warm for the next pass while shaving. Bowl latherers don't want to rap their knuckles inside the bowl mixing it up so they are more likely to like a larger scuttle.

Reading between the lines of your post I think your best bet is a Dirty Bird 1.5 if you're not entirely sure what you need.

I had the G5 and it simply did not keep the lather warm. Of course I'm a straight shaver so shaves take a bit longer. For a quick DE shave it's adequate-barely. The Oskar scuttle is legions better at keeping warm though.

I just made one in the pottery shop (it's in bisque fire now). It's very hard to have a latherable inner bowl, with a sufficient sized outer bowl to keep it warm, and have the whole thing be a convenient size.
