Which one - Futur or 60's SS?

Even though I am a month old noob I want to buy another safety razor and was looking at these two. I currently have a EJ 89L (love it) but want to add to the "stable". I like the thought of vintage but I also am drawn to the "Future" and being able to adjust. Anybody care to weigh in?

Happy Fourth of July! Thank you vets!

Super Speeds are great razors, but if you want adjustable why not go with a Gillette Super Adjustable? The long handled version is just about a long as a Futur and they are great shavers.

Just my 2¢ sir, how about a vintage adjustable? While a Fat Boy might seem dear, one will pop up on the BST for less than a Futur. And the vintage Gillette is a much better quality product. A Slim adjustable will run less, as will the Super Adjustables. You have a modern razor, it is time to see what they were like before the bloom was off ..

I would go with the Futur. The range on it is much greater than on a Slim or the over hyped Fat Boy. The audible feedback from the Futur is incredible, and it will give you a very close shave.

I dunno that the Futur has that much more range, according to the WIKI they have about the same range difference, low to high, in terms of the blade gap in thousandths. The Futur is, again according to the WIKI, much more aggressive though.

Disclaimer: I have shaved with only a Mergress/Progress from the Merkur adjustable family, and found the finish, the engineering, and the shave failing vs a vintage Gillette

SS is a great shaving razor. Slim Adjustables and Super Adjustables are also great shaving razors. I have all three, plus an EJ DE87. I could be happy shaving for the rest of my life with any of the four. Just because the Merkur can be dialed up to a more aggressive setting than the Gillettes doesn't make it any better. Not everyone needs to shave with a chainsaw. BBS is BBS, no matter how much or how little the razor cost.
If you already have an EJ razor, you're really not missing out on anything by not having any other safety razors.
In the interest of RAD, I say, buy them all.
You can get an SS, a Slim, and a Super, all in fantastic condition, for the same or less money than a Futur.

Being a "month old noob" you should go with the Gillettes. Then you can save up for a Futur. You really need to get your technique down pat before going with a Futur.
I almost bought a Futur for my first DE and I'm glad I didn't. I probably would have hacked my face up and been put off by the experience.

People who say the EJ or Gillettes are too mild need to load one up with a Feather blade.

The Futur is an excellent razor that shaves well with adjustability. I find that most razor blades shave well with the Futur even if they may not so in other razors. However, the razor head is a little bulky and requires a little more effort to shave in those difficult to reach regions. Would I recommend this to a new shave? Hard to say but I am a little disinclined to do so because of it's relative cost and that fact is isn't as agile as other razors. However, if you like wet shaving and have been doing so for a few weeks, I see no reason to hold off on a Futur purchase.

Well after reading Squash's post....I'd go with the ss.

I love my SS's

Everybody should have a SS.

These guys are brilliant!

I'd go for the SS.
It's a classic, the DE of DE's so to speak.
Not adjustable with a knob, but put a Red IP in it & you have a super speedy comfortable shave, change to a Feather & you have a beast on your hands, capable on shaving you right down to the follicles :w00t:
And it's so well built, you can easily put it in your will for your grandchildren to have.

I have not owned, or shaved with a Futur, but I would definitely choose the vintage Gillette. It's near impossible to top Gillette in terms of quality: these pieces were so well built most of them still shave as well today as they did 50+ years ago when they were first built.

I will also give my recommendation for a Gillette Adjustable. The Fatboy, Slim, and Super Adjustable are all great razors!! :tongue_sm

Superspeeds are great....but they're pretty mild. If you like the DE87, the SS may not get close enough for you. Inexpensive to find out.....I've gotten some good ones for less than $15. As others have said, a better comparison would be a Gillette adjustable. I haven't used a Super, but I HAVE tried several Slims and Fatboys. The FB is my favorite. I have a nice, cased example that I got for about $25. A deal, yes, but they are out there. My DE87 and FB are my two favorite razors, I rarely use anything else.

The Futur is a very nice razor and I like the heft of it. It feels like quality or luxury somehow. But I prefer a TTO adjustable for my DE razor. So my personal recommendation would have to be for one of the Gillette twist-open adjustables. The reason I have reservations against the Futur is the pop-off top, and the bulkiness of the head. And I would like to see a knurled handle on it, too. The Gillettes all avoid those shortcomings.

There is only one solution: you'll have to get them both. Both Razors are so different that they aren't really alternative choices imho; but the are both valuable additions to any den.
Having said that, the SS doesn't work well for me, whereas the Futur is my go-to razor.
