Where do we draw the line!

Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, and a few others are opening ON THANKSGIVING around 7pm for "black friday" sales.

i am completely against this in every way. just proves there is no line that greed can't cross. and yes i may be a little biased because i've worked in retail for 13 years. i feel like these companies dont care about their employees, only pleasing their share holders. i never minded getting to work at 5am on black friday, but 7pm on Thanksgiving, a time where dinner for most is just wrapping up, unforgivable.

Jesus is the reason for the season for me - and I refuse to get involved with BF (though I made the mistake ONCE) - would prefer to buy more birthday gifts instead. It's a predatory joke.

im positive any one working retail would much rather not work on thanksgiving.. profits trump associates any day.

I'm with you, it's ridiculous. I get that this is something that some do with family, but not everyone wants to go wait in lines, or work on thanksgiving. I haven't kept up with it, but aren't some employees having a hard time with this as well?

Whats sad is the throngs of people that will be lining up at stores all day on Thanksgiving now to be the first in the door at 7am. I for one rarely even go shopping on black friday. When I do, its often for myself! Believe it or not, a lot of clothing stores have great deals (all day). I'm not going to buy a pair of pants for my brother, but when they have an additional x% off of clearance items at GAP or Banana Republic, I'm not going to pass it up.

i'm betting a lot of them are. Target is paying time and a half, but if i worked there i would still not want to work on thanksgiving. for me its just the principle. its called black friday, not black thursday evening. and then next year they will be open on thanksgiving all day?? come on!!!

I'm surprised that the start of xmas shopping has not been moved up to Halloween yet.

Mmm it has been. There was lots of Christmas stuff for sale at Walgreens and Michael's Crafts well before Halloween even. Those are just two I saw off the top of my head. Many radios stations playing just Christmas music also before Halloween also.

- The situation you describe isn't caused by the companies. If you want to suggest greed on the part of any involved party, perhaps you should ask about the greed of those shoppers looking for a good deal on a particular good/service that day.

- The participating stores wouldn't do so if they didn't have good reason to believe there is demand for the service. If those companies don't fill the demands of their customers, someone else will and those companies (and their employees) would suffer.

- Not everybody treats Thanksgiving with the reverence you apparently do.

- If the employees of any company in the free world don't feel like the benefits of their jobs are worth the opportunity costs of working there, they are free to seek employment elsewhere, no?

Your basic assumption that People demand it and if you don't like your job, feel free to look for another one is valid. What you are failing to understand is that DEshave has a point as well. If Stores opened on Thanksgiving at noon, people would show up. Those same people would show up at 5 am on friday, if thats when they opened. Why not let people who enjoy spending time with their families, do that, and open later or actually open on FRIDAY on "balck friday". The money will be made either way.

Here in NL we have the "shops closing act"
Retail stores are not allowed to open on statuatory holidays (certain businesses are exempt EG: restaurants, bars, cinemas pharmacies ETC)
If it wasn't legislated the companies would have everyone working on Christmas Day

It's bad enough they are open 16 hours a day 7 days a week, but holidays should be protected.

I for one must agree. Let THANKSGIVING be THANKSGIVING.
personally I do not shop on Sundays.
To me Sunday is a day of rest and I rest.
One day a week devoted to peace and Quiet is little enough.
I also do not shop after 20:00 (8:00pm)
I have not found that I need something so badly that I can not wait till morning to get it.

Mr.DEshave I would let the aforementioned stores know how you feel about this.

When the closest and cheapest place for me to shop is the local Wal-Mart down the block here in Kentucky, believe me, the best time to shop is after 8. Less people, and the people you do see can be... interesting to watch.

Well, in the past politicians just moved Thanksgiving to allow an extended Christmas shopping season. That didn't work so well, mostly due to the short notice.

I make it a point to do no unnecesary commerce on any holiday. Everybody deserves to celebrate our national holidays, not just a select few white collar and unionized workers.
