What's new

What was your first car? Would you ever want another one?

I drove my dad's saab 900 for about a year after passing my test but the first car that i actually owned was a fiat punto. It was terrible but it was all mine. small and easy to park and drive but the engine was on its last legs and needed to be replaced after a couple of months. i wasnt sorry to see it go but i really miss the saab. i'd get a 93 if i could insure it and could see myself getting one in a few years if i want something bigger than my astra.

Mine was a 94 Altima. My parents gave it to me when they upgraded. It was a champagne color like below, it ran great forever. I think I got rid of it at 150,000 miles

My first car was a 1979 Ford Fairmont. The original owner was a little old couple who promptly applied those thick plastic seat covers and a manual choke. The four cylincer engine barely had enough power to get out of its own way. I would have to be real desperate to pick up another one of those.

67 Bug.
Red well mostly red. Factory hard top sun roof. Dropped in a 1600 dual port with a Holly Webber 2 barrel carb stinger exhaust and Norris 407 cam. Used to launch it at 6grand pull the front wheels off the ground with .456 gears. Un-beatable block to block on the loop in down town Puyallup on Friday and Saturday nights. Yeah I want another one!

Is insurance a hell of a lot cheaper in the US? You'd never be able to get insurance for most of these things in the UK. A first car with a V8? I can hear the insurance company laughing now..... I looked at a few things before I bought the Escort, and they wanted over £1000 for a ten year old BMW 316, back in 1996. As it was, I had to pay about £700, for a car which cost me £300. Friends of mine have just had to pay £3000 to insure their son on their 2002 Renault Clio 1.0.

FWIW, I now drive a Chrysler 300c with a 3.0 V6 diesel, and my wife has a Civic 1.6. We've got a multi-car policy, and pay less each year (fully comp) than I had to pay for that first car's cover, 3PF&T.

Insurance was pretty cheap for my Plymouth. The insurance company didn't even ask whether it was V8 or whatever, just looked up their value for the car in their book, which they calculated at a whopping $118 for a 1969 model in 1999 and based the quote around that and my age and driving record. Doubt they consider the car's propensity to be driven fast or recklessly in such a case, all they see is 30 year old junk. I'm sure if my first car was a new Corvette or something, I wouldn't have been able to even find a company willing to insure me at any price.

1960 Ford Falcon station wagon. Straight 6 with 2 speed automatic transmission. Definetly underpowered but it got me back and forth to college for a couple of years . In summer in N Louisiana it was rather nice as I could roll down all 4 windows plus the tailgate window and have a nice flow through breeze( no air conditioning). Back in the mid 60's most of us left windows down during hot weather unless rain was probable, no one bothered an unlocked parked car, at least in the parts of town I frequented, or at school.

First car was a 1986 pontiac sunbird. It was ok but I would not want another one. Eventually the rear shock came through the fender wheel (rusted through pretty good) and I replaced the starter at least 4X. Ah yes, that good ole GM feeling.

150,000 is not "running forever". 150K is just the wake up for some cars.

Heck, being a 94 that still newer than my current car (heavily modified 1991 2.0 16V VW Jetta GLI)

My first car was a beat up 78 Honda civic with a 1200cc engine.

I would love another one if it was restored. That car was simple. It had an AM radio, 4 speed stick and a manual choke.

Since every thing on it was so small maintaining it was a cinch.

Today's cars are not cars, They have morphed into entertainment systems. I want a car that's not an iPod

Commander Quan

Commander Yellow Pantyhose
A 1990 Chevy Corsica. If I remember correctly that car was also the best selling American made car in China that year, they sold 11 of them. Would I want another one? Absolutely, but only for one of my future kids to drive. The fact that it handled some of the relatively stupid stuff I tried to do in it, and prevented me from doing the insanely stupid stuff is probably the only reason I made it to my 17th birthday.

1960 VW Bug.....paid $400 for it and drove it during high school years. Great little guy, wish I still had it. Funny thing was it would never go over 50mph, but could drive it all week on just a few gallons of gas.

My second car, on the other hand... A 1969 MGC GT in Tartan Red with a completely redone leather interior and knockoff spoked wheels and flawless body. Why I sold it, I'll never know, but I sold it for too little. Even with the Prince of Darkness electrical system, it was truly a man's sports car. I miss it.
I had an MG Midget '66 in British Racing Green, knock-off wire wheels and, oddly, a functional electrical system (!). LOVED that car. What a great snarl it had when you stepped on it. And it cornered like a dream.

insurance really depends on the driver. i was young, with to many tickets, and considered a risk, and to top it off with the cars i had i was forced in to full coverage. the cadillac i had to pay around $250 per month!

I have no tickets, a pass-plus, 5 years of claim-free driving with no claims on my name ever (at fault or otherwise), live in an area classified as one of the lowest risks in terms of theft and vandalism, do less that 12,000 miles a year and a 1.6 Fiesta is still approximately the equivalent of $100 a month. All because I'm 24.

Motorists in the UK get shafted, young motorists even more so. Don't even get me started on petrol. /rant

A 1972 Datsun 510 - purchased in 1980 for $50. Worked great until the Datsun met up with a couple of plains bison a couple years later.

It was a fun car to drive - and would definitely drive one again.

my first car was a Dodge (rebranded Mitsubishi) Colt 200 GT 1992, like the picture above. I drived this shoebox from winter 2001 to October 2005. The engine died the same day I get my degree XD I was on my way to get fuel and kaboooomm...I was on the highway, no cellphone and at the very moment I begun to walk, a thundershower started. Here's the good part, it was still a good day lolll

Would I'd like have another one ? Right now, I'm sitting in my Cadillac DTS 2006 and I can sincerely tell you that I wouldnt drive this piece of junk (the dodge colt) for all the Toggles in the world. Jesus, the heater wasnt even working properly, I'm in Canada for Christ sake lol

My first car was a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am.

Was it a flashy car, no. Fast, yes. For a four door family ride the thing had a motor in it. The seats were very comfortable and roomy? I could fit 10 people in there easily.

Would I drive another one? I think so. Even by today's standards, it was a nice car, but as a teenager I didn't think much of it.
