What's new

What type of wee brush is this?

I recently found this little guy:

It has no signature or other inscription on the barrel of the handle and on the underside of the handle, just the remnants of "best badger". The handle is 18 mm high and the loft is 30 mm high; the base diameter is 18 mm.

Here's a picture of it next to my nano Scot (handle 25 mm high, loft 33 mm):

And here's a picture of the two of them next to a couple of big bruiser cousins:

Is this a Simpsons brush or another type of wee brush? I don't know enough about the small brushes...

It's awful cool, whatever it is. Where did you find it? I mean in general terms, like estate sale, flea market, antique store?

Unless you intend to leave it as , it looks ripe for a modern Wee Scot knot. It looks like it would hold a 13-14mm.

You better guard your tong bad talking a genuine butterscotch around this lot, you might start some kind of riot :lol::lol::lol:

You found a really unique little brush there, thanks for sharing.

Curious how comfortable its overall design, coloring and loft seem to match your vintage Simpsons. I wonder if Simpsons' former managing director - I seem to recall his name being Carter - might help you in identifying its provenance? I ran across a random item the other day mentioning that he and another associate intended to resurrect the Coates brush mark and begin manufacturing in June this year. Your new brush is certainly attractive.

Thanks all for the comments. It is a sweet looking brush.

Thanks David, and I agree with your observations. Good idea about that contact; I wonder how I might find him... maybe ask someone at Vulfix?

Current Simpson management from Progress/Vulfix are members here. I believe the user name is Simpson Brushes. They were responsive to pm.

What do the A,S,3,M stand for?

AS = Alexander Simpson?
3= Size?
M=?

Thanks for any help.

Good question, and I don't have an answer. The AS#M brushes (sizes 2 & 3) have popped up in Fidjit's Butterscotch thread. They look to be an Emperor variant and do not appear to be made anymore.

While we're all admiring your candy collection, I can't tell you how beautiful I think that nano-Scot skin has become. And is it just me, or is that KeyHole a spitting image of an Iowa farmer's wife standing with her back to us like she's viewing an event at the state fair, the back of her jacket embroidered with last winter's needlepoint project.

Again, great lineup. I hope you can figure out where that little guy came from.

Yeah I miss that little keyhole. I won it on the bay but the knot wasn't to my taste and it seemed a real shame to reknot it, so I BST it and he was the lucky winner. I've since picked up a couple replacement Simpson scotches, but that one is probable still the most interesting one I've owned. What I REALLY want is that scotch simpson with stand (forget the model) that another B&B'er won in a lot. That thing was nifty.

But of these I gotta say the new guy is my favorite. My guess is it actually belonged in a travel shave kit (possibly a gillette, most of their brushes are that nasty white-painted wood, but there are a few bakelites out there).
