What is it about coffee (and tea)?

From the Coffee FAQ
What is it about coffee that makes us go to extremes in pursuit of that perfect cup? We seek out the prefect green beans selected from hundreds of varieties for around the world, perform tedious scientific investigations to discover the perfect temperature profile to roast the beans, spend hundreds of dollars to crush the beans into the perfect particle size, argue over the merits of various ways of wetting the beans, obsess over a few seconds of soaking, or whether to wet the beans from the outside or inside of the pile. With hundreds of products to make coffee, and thousands upon thousands of specialty coffee shops, this is no mere fad. Just what is it that inspires so many of us to such extreme measures?

I's say because a really good cup of coffee is a true pleasure. A bad or mediocre cup is something of a disappointment. You know it could have been better. I live near Portland Oregon and we take the pursuit of a fine beverage pretty seriously. We have great coffee shops here, great micro breweries and there are some very fine little distilleries here as well. I haven't been on this site very long but it seems to me the users enjoy simple things done very well.

People always ask me why I go through the "hassle" of making coffee the way I do.

My aunt use to tell me "A Mr.Coffee would be so much easier."

Yes, it may be easier, but for me life has never been about doing what is easy all the time. I enjoy the ritual of the entire process. I found what works for me and much like shaving I look forward to it every morning.

If I am going to do something as simple as making a great cup of coffee I am going to do it right.

Has to be the way it stimulates all the senses. The taste and aroma is anything but plain, stronger that most other foods. And typically consumed at temperatures higher or lower than just about anything else people eat. Mix in the stimulative and addictive qualities of caffeine and no wonder we can't stop. :tongue_sm

Whatever we do, be it coffee, tea, shaving, cooking, pens, photography, booze, etc, etc, etc, if we can do it a little better, make it something a little more enjoyable, we make our lives better. Life is too short to not make it a little better in our own ways. Indulge, enjoy, LIVE LIFE.
