Viscosity

Pardon my use of terminology, but I just shaved with my Col. Conk Almond shave soap that I bought at the same time as my Tabac. I was blown away by Tabac. Nice in every way.

Tonight I decided to use Col. Conk Almond. I love the smell, but.............
It just didn't have that slipperyness and layer of protection that Tabac does. In simple terms, it gives a pretty good shave, but I could feel more drag on my skin than when using Tabac. It lathered good, but it didn't provide that layer of protection.

Back to viscosity. It was like shaving with a 5w-30 conventional, not a 15w-40 synthetic. Know what I mean?

I guess I'll use Col. Conk in the shower as a soap and continue using only Tabac. I'm hooked!

The almond isn't bad, you just can't compare it to a quality triple milled tallow based soap like Tabac. Apples to oranges.

I had the same realization the first time I used Tabac. I'm a big fan of analogies and I think your's hit the nail on the head. To me, using a glycerin soap feels like using a plastic shovel to dig a ditch. It can get the job done but not without a lot of grief along the way. It's nowhere near substantial enough to dominate my heavy beard daily.

I have a feeling many who prefer tallow soaps have thicker beards because it is a more substantial product to make the job easier.

I agree re: apples to oranges, gylcerin to tallow but, if you play around with the water ratio (probably more) you should be able to improve the performance of the Conk.
Being a glycerin based soap, it shouldn't be a problem to get it very slick. Add just enough water to make it shiny/glossy.
