What's new

Vintage takes the cake!

Does anybody else have a better shave with vintage razors? I recently purchased a 40's Gillette Superspeed off the 'bay and cleaned it up a little bit to use it (still pending full restoration). My shave was a lot more comfortable than before and i'm addicted to that razor now. Current setup: View attachment 340837I was using my EJ DE89L with Proraso Red before.

I don't know if I get a "better" shave from a vintage.... it depends on the razor..... but I get a nice, nostalgic feeling when I use a vintage Gillette. Especially one made in the U.S. They are well made and something from our past that we can take a great deal of pride in.

I don't know that I get a better shave from a vintage razors, but they're every bit as good as the shaves I get from my modern razors. And there's just something about the way the feel in my hand that I like.

It's all psychological. You may prefer a vintage razor, and you may prefer vintage razors, but to argue that they made better razors back in the day than current day specimens like the EJ DE89/Muhle R89 is ridiculous.

I get far better shaves from my vintage Gillettes than my modern Muhle R89 & Merkurs (11c & 41c), or even my Tradere OC. I get excellent shaves with the Gillettes, without really thinking about what I am doing, they just work! YMMV though.

i was at the art of shaving store a few months back when the wife and i took a trip to san fran. he asked what i used to shave with and i told him exclusively vintage razors. the look on his face was disgust/astonishment lol he said "why!!!" i told him that they give great shaves, are cheaper than buying new ones, are very durable, and they give me that awesome feeling know that many fine men from the past may have shaved with this same razor. now tell me your EJ DE89L can give u that feeling lol

I have not come across a razor I can't get a perfect shave with.

Sure they are all different but once you know what each one wants they all just become razors.

I wasn't saying they made better razors back in the day, simply stated I had a better shave (more comfortable/enjoyable). It is less aggressive than my DE89, but since I have no choice but to shave everyday my face felt nice on Friday after 5 straight days of WTG/XTG/ATG shaving.

I agree completely with you!

I'm still a noob, so hopefully one day i'll be able to say the same thing.

Bot. The only hiccup in this is the O/C razors I have difficulty with but everything from my EJ to Vintage Gillette TTO's I can get great shaves with.

Yes.
I had a 34C, then I purchase a 1960 Flare Tip Superspeed and vastly preffered the SS to the 34c.
So I got rid of the 34C and now have my Flair Tip, a Red Tip and a 1961 Slim Adjustable.

I have a quite wide variety of modern and vintage Razors. My go-to: a 1970 Gillette Super Adjustable 'Black Beauty'. That's one heck of a razor.

I also used to prefer modern razor and didn't really care about vintage, until I got an almost mint condition Aristocrat Jr. for cheap at an antique store. Gave it a try and and have been using it since. I get the same shave as the modern razor but with the vintage I seem to have a more enjoyable shave.
