vintage Dovo 7/8 or Filarmonica 14 7/8

Looking to purchase my third straight. Currently have a Ralf Aust 6/8 round point, Ralf Aust 7/8 Square Point and now am looking for another 7/8 ... leaning toward toward vintage Dovo or Filarmonica 14. What is the opinion on these older straights? Do the vintage Dovos in particular take a good edge?

Have a great day.

Jason

If you are talking about the Fritz-Bracht era Dovo's, they are very highly regarded. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for either razor in that size.

Are all Fritz Bracht stamped or marked with his name? Special markings? What about vintage Dovos that are not marked/ not a Fritz Bracht?

As far as I know, the Fritz-Bracht will be stamped on the reverse side of the tang with the Dovo stamp on the front. As for the other ones, I'm not sure. Dovo has a good reputation so I'm sure it's quality steel, but if you want the best of the best the FB era ones are usually regarded as so.

I've had several FB Dovos - to me, none were a big deal or any better than a new Bismark.
All were very fine excellent razors - just sayin' that I did not see any big deal with the FB.
I'd have to see the two razors to make a judgement.

You are probably right, maybe just another razor in the hype machine.

I have shaved and honed both. To me they are both very nice razors. The issue is, based on popularity, you'll pay a premium on either choice. Unless you have your heart set on those two brands, you can potentially find a better value if you broaden to many of the other quality vintage makers out there.

Personally, and this is purely my own thoughts, of owning Puma's, Wade & Butchers, Thiers Issards, Dubl Duck, and many other high razors you can name, if you can get a better shaver than an early vintage Filarmonica 14 I would love to see it, you may equal it but I don't know if you will better it.

that is very helpful insight from your experience. Thank you Sir.
