Vegan Shave Soaps Revisited...

Been out of the loop for a short while so I'm not really sure what is avail. out there. Looking for Vegan Shave Soaps, vegetable based, possibly using essential oils as the fragrance. Someone mentioned Mike's Natural soaps, but I see he uses tallow.

I have found Honeybee Soaps in a search & will contact them for an ingredient list. Anyone have any recommendations for "known" vegan soaps?

Thanks!

I'd look at some of the French and German soaps. I'm a vegan when it comes to food but not when it comes to shaving. Still, some of my favorites are veggie soaps: Calani, Martin de Candre, Dr. Dittmar, Klar Seifen, Savon du Midi, Institut Karite, Pre de Provence, Provence Sante. Double check ingredients but I think these are all vegan. I am sure that they are all excellent. They are some of my favorites vegan or not.

Thanks for that list. After doing a bit of research I see I am going to have to really read the ingredients lists on the soaps.

At a quick glance, the Dr. Dittmar & Pre de Provence soap contains Tetrasodium Etidronate, which is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide according to the following site.

Even our beloved Proraso contains Methylparaben, which is on the "Top Five" bad chemical list.

I hate to be a "nit-picker", but I do prefer to have a "safe" soap applied to my face, especially when many of these chemicals are considered to have a trans-dermal effect.

This is a good thread here that discusses vegan shaving

I use kiss my face a lot and some of the razorock are fine. Mamabear of course. Honeybee should be fine. New la toya. Just really need to look out for tallow and lanolin. There is some Cremo on the never ending PIF that is vegan

Good luck in your search, I'm interested to hear what you find that meets your criteria. Out of curiosity, what shavings soap/soaps are you using now?

Proraso has been reformulated and no longer contains parabens:

I think there are many soaps that would fit your bill. I would look for veggie-based soaps. The most esteemed of which is Martin de Candre (MdC). It only has six ingredients:

That seems to be animal product and paraben free.

Other veggie based soaps that come to mind are: Institut Karite, some of the Razorock soaps, La Toja Manantiales in the wooden bowl (not sure about the stick), Pre de Provence, L'Occitane Cade... but I have not checked those to see if they meet your exacting criteria.

i would suggest Mama Bear's as they are a very good vegetable-based soap. Also, Kiss My Face is a vegan alternative soap. Martin de Candre might be the best vegan soap if the stearic acid is vegetable-based.
Michelle at Mystic Water gets her tallow from ethically rendered animals if that is of any interest. i used to be a vegan for 18 years and, i have to agree with UngerWoo, when it comes to shaving, tallow soaps are hard to beat. i understand your moral dilemma. Good luck to you.

Well, up to now I really haven't gotten that serious about this, but I have started really looking at chemicals in the products that my family uses, and it is just ridiculous what is in the list.

I have been using Proraso in the green can and also Kiss My Face moisture shave.

Thanks to all for the suggestions - looks like I have my work cut out for me as far as research goes.

Sooooo...I think what I wrote was clear. I appreciate your effort to clarify my lifestyle though.

Katz, I'm interested to hear what you come up with. Keep us posted, please.

Yup, I will reply with my findings. May take a few days as I will probably be calling or sending emails to the various companies for further clarification.

Problem is, a soap that may be "clean" at present could go through a formulation change in the future, so you would really have to keep on top of things...or maybe stock up on several pucks at once. :wink2:

Just a quick update here -

I came across "Nanny's Silly Soap Company" which apparently produces a very clean & vegan soap as far as chemicals go;
No synthetic foaming agents, preservatives, chelators, scents or colours are used in my soap. Only essential oils and other botanicals are used for scent, and for colours plant based ingredients and clays are used.

Problem is, for us stateside folks, she is based in the UK. I suppose she does ship to the US but at what cost & time frame...

Will be sending her an email...

I forgot about Nanny's. I ordered some of their soaps at the end of July. I'll let you know when I receive the order.

I ordered three soaps, which ran me about $38 including shipping. I didn't think that was too much as long as they perform well. I've read lots of good things about Nanny's here.

Be afraid, by sort of afraid!

Really, this type of chemical six degrees of separation is often used to scare people, usually by someone with a hidden profit motive.

You can use this same thing argue that we should not be using soap:

Soap is made from fats - which are know to cause obesity and heart attacks and sodium hydroxide, a stong base which is also used to disolve flesh from bones.

Or what about sodium chloride (aka table salt, and also found in many soaps).

Sodium chloride is made from sodium, a metal so reactive that it will burst into flame on contact with water and chlorine, a poisonous gas used as a weapon in World War I.

Point taken...

If you saw my vegan food list, I suppose you would have an even stronger opinion regarding my choices.

It doesn't get much more pure and simple than Martin de Candre. Ingredients: Stearic Acid, Water, Coconut Oil, Potassium hydroxide (lye), glycerin, and fragrance.

Honeybee and Mystic Water are my two favorite artisan soaps.

Proraso no longer contains parabens of any sort.

BTW, please stay away from blueberries and many fruits, they contain methyl paraben as well as other types of parabens.

Where are you getting the ingredient list from? From what I am finding, the companies are not listing everything on the labels.

From the ingredients list on the packaging.
