What's new

8 year old 70% Laurel savon d`Alep

Aleppo soap cross section.jpg

I ordered 9 more bars of this because it is basically the best soap in the World because of it`s age, simplicity and purity; it only has 4 ingredients - 30% olive oil, 70% Laurel oil, lye and water - that`s it.

This quality of soap is nearly unobtainable now to buy new; it is rare.

A hand made soap looks rough and irregular in size, colour and shape and has a unique aroma - if it looks a uniform size with a neat makers stamp, it is rushed and machine-pressed.

The other main contenders for the best soap available are Nablus, Palestinian olive soap and Marseille, French traditionally hand-made olive soap.

I am a herbalist interested in traditional essential oil products and have visited the handful of factories in the West Bank in 1982 and I regularly went to the old soap works in Marseille and perfume houses in Grasse because I lived in Bordeaux in the nineties with my family.
The smells were divine and unforgettable.

Greek, Italian and Turkish olive soaps can be good as long as the olive content is over 70% by weight and it is matured - this makes them expensive.

It is totally hand made in Aleppo, Syria and is matured for eight years - like the best artisan cheeses and wines in cool, dry cellars and even caves - like for beer lagering in Germany.

This is the highest Laurel oil content available and is a natural deodorant plus it repels insects which is useful in Sub-Saharan Africa and the hot, humid Countries.

I have ordered 4 more bars and soaps like this are rare - there is very little soap like this in Aleppo because it is a war zone.

This is usually £12 a bar with p&p so I got a wonderful bargain for mature artisan soap - it is more than good enough to be a heirloom product and will only increase in value because of it`s quality and rarity; so I`m absolutely delighted.

The Marseille and Nablus soaps are nowhere near this age and fabulous quality soaps are 24 months old.

What is the website ?

Oh by the way - is it a good shaving soap ? - don`t be silly - they were using this with bronze cut-throats 4000 years ago so I`m sure they`ve got the hang of it by now haha !

No clean pure piped water back then !

The soap factory is 700 years old - so that, alone speaks volumes.
