VDH Deluxe Soap and snotty discharge

Sorry for the gross title.

I recently melted a puck of the VDH Deluxe soap. I then put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes yesterday. Today I tried it out. I put some hot water on the top for a couple minutes like I usually do with soap. When I went to pour out the water so I can load my brush a snotty material poured into the sink:eek:

Not a big deal but just weird. I hope it wasn't a key ingredient that settled at the top after I melted.

It worked well. Reminded me of my Amber Col Conk in smell. Lather was similar. VDH may be a bit more moisturizing.

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen. The problem is, I didnt use it in its original form to see if it behaves the same way before it is melted....

anyone?

It definitely softens my whiskers when I use it, but it tends to go a little fast and sometimes the lanolin comes out of the soap if it's not meticulously dried. Certainly better than Williams Mug Shave Soap in terms of moisturizing and lather. The scent smells like soap, but that might have something to do with the lanolin in it. A puck cost me a little under $2 at Walgreens.

Haven't experienced this myself... but there you go.

I used to use VDH a lot. I also melted it into a mug and shave stick (empty deo stick). I was always using VDH Glycerin though, so maybe it was the different mixture. Sorry about the snot.

Hopefully it is a one time thing and doesn't get snotty everytime I use. Since it is a relatively soft soap maybe I won't let hot water soak on top for a few.

I have melted both types of VDH with no problems. However I have not cooled it in a freezer. I usually let it cool overnight before using it. How long did you blast it in the microwave? I usually give it about 20 seconds.

I have heated mine in the microwave and poured into another container. I stirred it a bit before pouring it into the container and let it cool on its own. Never had anything like "snot" happen. Might have something to do with being in the freezer. Hope it still works well for you like mine does for me. It's pretty good stuff.

I'm thinking it's just what melted from the water on top. How much did you use? VDH Deluxe is a pretty soft glycerin based soap, it shouldn't take more than just the smallest amount of water to coat the surface to get ready to use. I rarely add any water to a glycerin based soap and seem to get fine results.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the freezer.

I've melted 3 pucks of VDH select and glycerine and use REALLY HOT WATER to soften the soap before i shave, and i have never had anything like this happen before.

The only thing i do different from you from what i read in your post is that i let the soap harden on its own instead of putting it in the freezer./

I put in microwave for 10 sec, checked, then 10 sec, 90% melted. I then stirred a bit and the soap may have melted another 2%. I then put in another 5% and it fully melted. I then put in freezer for about 10 minutes and then took it out and let it cool overnight.

I placed about 1 tbs of hot water on top of soap. Showered for 7 min. Poured the snotty substance off. Then I loaded soap.

I haven't used since but will soon. I will try again with the water to soften and again without to see if i get snot again.

Two things here, I think. You froze it in the freezer, and it never properly cooled after nuking. Try it in the fridge next time, and it should improve things for you.

The other thing is that the Deluxe is glycerin based, so too hot a water will melt it and turn it into the goo you describe. Hot water is fine as long as it doesn't sit on the soap as long as you described. I can usually throw boiling hot water on it, swirl it around for about twenty seconds, and it gets the soap nice and hot without melting it.

Maybe it is the freezing that did it. This is the first time I tried this method because I heard members doing this.

I guess that some glycerin soaps are different because my col conk, mamabear, and honeybee glycerin soaps never get the goo.

Yeah, I usually cool it in the fridge for 24 hours and let it sit at room temp for a day before use. I tried quick freezing it before and I had similar results to yours.

this morning, I soaked my brush, but NO water on the soap - I just went at it with a slightly damp brush, and the lather was just as good - and no mucus in the shave bowl....
