I was running some errands this morning and decided to stop into a shop that never has anything. To my delight they cheerily answered yes when I asked if any vintage razors had arrived recently. I was brought back to the display case I know very well and there were sitting three decent looking pieces. A Red Tip, a Slim, and a Champagne Lady Star Gillette. All seemed to be in good shape except for all the soap crud. I examined each and noted the prices. Apparently the shopkeepers had decided to price their pieces based on Ebay. *sigh* The different between Ebay and your shop, sir, are that the $40 Red Tips on Ebay have been cleaned and shined to a mirror finish, and they usually come with cases.
It turned out that the rarest one (correct me if I am wrong) was also priced the most reasonably. That's right! Of the three, the Lady Star razor was the cheapest. I haggled a bit and got a decent price so I bought it.
Gentlemen, this is a 1965 (K2) Champagne-colored Lady Gillette after some scrubbing bubbles and more scrubbing with a toothbrush. The paint on the handle (including the stars) is 100%. There is no brassing. The TTO mechanism opens smoothly and closes tightly. The only real minus is the hazy finish on the top of the doors. Anyone know the best way to shine those back up?
So this is going to be a gift for my wife for V-day. I always ask her if she would give DE a try but she is never too enthusiastic. I hope this little gift of her very own razor will entice her to give it a shot. If not, at least I have a really unique piece for my humble collection.
