Two new rocks in

Yesterday I got a new Oozuko stone to play with.
I wanted to try something very hard, and boy did this stone deliver.
After 30 mn lapping session with DMT XXC (120) it is still not completely flat, there are spots close to the corners that are a bit low. I managed to lap enough useful area to test though. The edge was very smooth and really sharp, no harshness what so ever. The real color is very light gray very uniform except for the two brownish spots. The slurry is milky white and the stone feel buttery during honing.

The next one is a rare bird.
According to the information available from Morihei and JNS
It is not a Kyoto stone but North Japan stone. It was mined in the summer and cut in the winter indoors, but because the weather was cold outside all windows were closed so all worker got lung disease and died around 1950, so no more made after 1950th.

The stone is very similar to Aoto in grit (~3-5k) but harder, this one has very nice blue figuring. Cuts fast, probably a bit faster than Aoto, and the slurry breaks down rather quickly. Very cool stone IMHO.

With all your japanese stones what method do you find works best for finishing. Do you start with a slurry and hone until it is just a sludge? Water only? Start with slurry and slowly dilute to water?

Or is each stone different and you have to try the above methods to find what works best?

Depneds on the stone, the slow ones you have to use with slurry refreshes, the fast ones I use with one light slurry dilution and very few laps and finish with water only. So in essence depends on the stone.

Very beautiful rocks :w00t:

I'm a big fan of the Oozuko edge, ever since you so kindly honed on one of yours. Fantastic edge!

Dare one ask what kind of money is needed for some Oozuko greatness?

I really like the way both look. I am glad you got a nice edge off the first one, and I agree the marbling on the second is amazingly cool!
