Turkish Ear Hair Removal

OK guys, I was a little unsure about where to post this thread but this seems like the appropriate place. I was wondering if any of you were familiar with the technique used by Turkish barbers to remove ear hair.

Here is a video showing the technique of how it is done:

How do you guys think they do this? My guess is benzine on some soft of swab. If anyone has tried this is it an effective way to remove ear hair? Does anyone know other ways to remove ear hair beside pulling them out one-by-one with tweezers?

I'll assume that by benzine you mean gasoline/petrol. That is not what they are using. It is almost certainly some sort of alcohol. Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) is my suspicion based on the color of the flame.

I have no idea what they're doing, but I also want to find a better way to remove ear hair. It's pernicious and difficult to get out. I usually go after them with a pair of needlenose pliers for electronics. Usually gets most of them, but isn't particularly fun. I also have to carefully shave around the outer parts of my ears.

Has anyone tried hot wax on their ears? Probably not much more fun than the pliers, but might be faster.

A Turkish barber here in NZ said to me "Don't flinch" and proceeded to do that to me but using a lighter. He waved the flame around my ears and along my cheekbones where I have some stray hairs. It was an interesting experience and I did go back a couple of times. Sadly he's now moved on.

Sounds like the fire shaving guy!

I can ask to a local barber here if you want to know more about it :001_smile

Really? That is super cool of you, I would appreciate it. I tried to do a general internet search but did not come up with much.

As a separate question, do you guys think this procedure is safe to do on yourself?

When I was in Turkey a few years ago every shave seemed to end with the flame bit.

While I didn't get it done my father did. No pain at all, and he said it worked.

You'd really need to find a Turkish barber thou, and I doubt that is easy.

And of course here in the U.S. likely every State in the Union would try to revoke a barber's license or jail him for doing such a "dangerous" thing. Sheesh, it looks like the perfect thing for those stupid ear hair we all get with age. I don't know about you other fellows but mine are snow white. It actually helps to hide them a bit but I HATE dealing with them. Besides, it just makes you feel old and I am not one of those who dwells on aging. Mostly I hate dealing with them. I am using a small Remington cordless trimmer right now and would much rather do the flame thing. Probably best to have someone else(wife?) do it. Doing it yourself may get you a scalp fire pretty quick. A head full of singed hair would not be fun.

Regards, Todd

+1. I currently use a Wahl beard trimmer but it is difficult to get those stray hairs. I gave up on using tweezers since my eyes and hair will not cooperate. :mad3:

OK, I've had this done on several occasions, whilst getting a shave in Turkey, and also in Morocco. They use a piece of cotton wool wrapped around a metal or wooden skewer, then dipped in Methylated spirit and set alight.

I can definately say that although looking quite scary, especially when performed flambouyantly as in the video (actually it is always done with a flourish), it does not hurt at all, as contact with the skin is minimal, and only for a split second every pass, allowing plenty of time for the skin to cool before the next pass.

On a couple of occasions the barber has tilted my head back, pinched my nostrils shut, and done my nose hairs too.

I have also had it done with a cigarette lighter, but that can get quite warm!

The flaming skewer method is definately better.

I'm on my phone so I can't see the videos being talked about but I know quite a few barbers over here use singeing tapers to get rid of ear hair. It's very safe if done properly and doesn't hurt.
I'll look at the videos when I get home to see if it's the same thing.

I shave my ear hairs with a disposable Bic Metal, the razor head is small enough to get in there and the blade guard keeps me from slicing the ear. I am glad that my Walgreens has started to stock those razors again.
