I'm going to echo that vintage razors are better. They're from a time and place where things were made to last you a lifetime instead of today's disposable culture, and that's why I'm shaving with a razor that is 16 years older than I am. Modern razors including the merkur vision probably won't be in working order 50 years from now, they are complicated and expensive monsters.
I'll go out on a limb and say that Gillette from back in the day is one of the pinnacles of industrial production from any day or age, period. The quality of their materials and design are really about as good as it ever got.
Yep, you bet! If you like milder razors, any Super Speed will work well. For more aggressive tastes, a Gillette Aristocrat (American) or Red Tip is the ticket. If you aren't sure, or your tastes change, try a Gillette Adjustable. All perform better than any modern-made TTO.
Vintage is the way to go with TTO razors, I have one "affordable" modern TTO razor in my dopp kit.
Granted it's one of the Sally Beauty Supply TTO's for about ten bucks but it's flimsy, squeaky and most likely wont last but since it is easily and cheaply replaced in the event of a travel mishap I can deal with it
If you do want a new one, the Feather Popular would be a good one to consider. Lightweight but well-made and inexpensive.
I've never tried a Parker. I've read mixed reviews as the OP has, but after reading http://sharpologist.com/2012/06/parker-razors.html I'm actually considering getting one now. Mantic and Leisureguy have good things to say about the 92R.
Besides the feather- ebay seller has one called a Misaki- made in Japan and works very much like a heavier Feather Popular. I have one and I like it very much. Last look it was 12.95 plus a reasonable shipping charge.
