Truth in Packaging

This is a picture of the brush which belonged to my Grandfather. Notice if you will the description on the side of the box. Yep, that is some exceptionally rare badger in that one.
I really want to reknot this myself and have read about losing the knot using a bamboo steamer. Question is as this is a Lucite handle, does the common wisdom base here think the handle can go through that process without it getting destroyed???:confused1

Yep, that's a rare High Mountain White 1 Band Nylon Manchurian Badger!

Please don't steam it! You can remove the knot safely using the methods described in Brush Making and Restorations sub-forum. That'll end up being one great looking heirloom. Congrats, and enjoy!

Aagh, removing Nylon bristles from a brush is like realizing the oysters you just ate were sitting in the sun for two days before you got to them - you know that a bad experience is coming your way and that there isn’t anything you can do to avoid it.

Nice handle though.

You are selling your grandfather's brush?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! That is the same make/model as his that some auction outfit in East Texas is selling. I just stumbled on that rummaging around on eBay. No way that brush will leave the family as long as I'm alive...I sure wish I could get a decent knot in it though. I would really enjoy using it.

Removing nylon knots from Lucite handles can be tricky, if your not comfortable doing it yourself, contact one on the brush vendors/hobbyist here.

IMO, they look fantastic when completed.

Have you restored brushes before?
It is not rocket science but like anything it requires skill and experimentation to dial it in right.
Also it is time consuming.
If you like craft projects then go for it.
I hate craft projects and since being irreplaceable brush, i'd give it to Garry Arrington or Rudy Vey for restoration.

I sent it up to Rudy a while back. He was most helpful and straightforward. Seems there would be a few cosmetic blemishes which would be necessary if he did the job. I couldn't see my way to doing that so it was returned. Shame too as I would really like to use this. That nylon bristle knot is just. ....creepy though. I want no part of that

DO NOT STEAM THIS BRUSH

I stemed a lucite brush from the same era recently and melted the text right off the bottom. I was luck enough to not have seriously ruined the handle. If you want to reknot, cut the hairs down to the base and use a drill press to get the rest out. Steam will destroy at least some of this brush. Meguires PlastiX will do wonders on the Lucite to really shine it up.

I wouldn't say the nylon knot is creepy, but it definitely adds a 'cheapness' to what would otherwise be a nice brush.

Not creepy?? Drag it across your face at 6:30 AM. Think of Freddy Kruger. Yeah, I agree with the cheap concept as well.
