What's new

Tried a 39c Sledgehammer today.

Was not very impressed, it didn't feel as close as my Futur. I actually have some razor burn from it, maybe my technique was just off today? What do you gents think?

What technique makes this razor really perform? Does it require some serious face tightening to work well?

It works well for me regardless of how I use it. Has a rather broad exposure angle so nothing special needed as far as how you hold it.

Try a different blade in it for your next shave.

Stretching your skin is always a good idea with any razor

I find this razor to be very blade sensitive. Also you could have issues with blade placement. Because of the design it is difficult to situate the blade perfectly. If in corectly it will have uneven blade exposure. Also the tension on the blade can change the shave. I find it's not good to tighten it down too much. That was my experience with this razor. Not as close shave with more irritation like you experienced. The razor just looks soo nice and has many loyal followers. Maybe with some more feedback you could turn you luck around with the razor.

I have had the 39C and still have the 37C Slants and find that they work particularly well really sharp ones, such as the Feather blades. I also do have a Futur which I love but, with the right blade (as mentioned, Feathers in my case) the slants work very well.

Alatron is right about the blade placement and it does perform better with some blades. From all the DE's I've owned and tried this is one of 3 that I'll never let go of, gives me really fantastic shaves only surpassed by the cobra.

Used my 39C yesterday with a new Voskhod blade - the shave for me was excellent. Not as aggressive as my R41...but certainly a very good DFS - 3 pass - shave. Alatron is correct in that blade placement and tension are important. I don't do a lot of skin stretching, but I do add just a touch of pressure to get the results I want.

My failed attempt today was performed with and Astra SP blade. I'll have to explore different options. If it doesn't work out, it'll be in the B/S/T forum. Thanks for the response gents!

Keep trying and after one week if you are still getting the same results, let it go. i could not get on with it, either. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the 39C. I am a new fan of the slants with my recent purchase of the 37C. My 1st time with it I had a great BBS shave (face and dome). It was effortless. So... far I used it with a Astra SP, Feathers, and Super Iridiums. I hope that the 39C can work for you because it is a great razor, IMO. With that said... if you do put it on BST, it will be sold instantly. Good luck and keep us posted.

Love my 39c, but if I am not very careful with pressure, I get burnt. Just let it glide with good lather, shallow blade angle, and a sharp blade. When I manage that, I get closer shaves than I can get with the rest of the rotation (currently pre war Tech, SS flare tip, HD, Slim).
Good luck getting used to it.
Cheers!

As someone mentioned above, check the blade was seated correctly. The easiest way I find is to turn the razor head upside down, slide the blade on, and then screw on the handle (all the while upside down). When I first got my slant I did that instinctively, but I've read of some who had issues and didn't do it that way. Worth a try anyway.

I prefer my 39C over my Futur as well as my long handled Progress!
However I just picked up a Joris spiril handled Palladium and WOW!!

No special technique required. One of my favorite razors of all time.

Well gents, I officially toss my hat in on the slant. Back to my R41, might pick up a Fatip or a Joris. The slant will be posted for sale as soon as I meet the required number of days membership to sell it in the B/S/T. Thanks gents for all of your input

I'm sorry the slant didn't work out for you. Are you sure after 2 shaves it's really time to let it go?
I know how you feel. I have a Feather non-folding SS that's been night and day on some shaves.
My experience with the 39c is that it's a beast when it comes to weight. Irritation on the neck would tell me you're pressing too hard, even when one thinks they're using very little pressure. The slants were designed not only for course hair, but for those suffering from sensitive skin. If you're getting razor burn from the 39c but can comfortably shave with a stock R41, I would try once more and focus on the weight and as others have mentioned- a sharper blade. (The 39c makes almost any shave a great one with any blade.)

I understand each face is different. But I am biased when it comes to slants, so here's hoping it works for you.
