Traveling With a Brush

I'm backpacking through Europe during June, spending most of my nights in hostels. I was wondering how you guys pack your brush. I'm trying to find or think of some hollow cylinder that would protect the bristles while still being somewhat breathable, and having been able to come up with any good ideas. So what do you guys do for extended trips?

I use the Simpsons travel brush container, but lots of folks use prescription pill bottles with holes drilled in them for air circulation.

1. Tall pill bottle. Take your brush to your pharmacy and ask for a bottle to fit. Drill some holes top and bottom.
2. Easier & effective... Wrap your brush in a shirt or slip into a shoe. Works just fine.

+3 on the pill bottle. I use the one shown here on the right sitting on it's "ventilated" cap to pack the Shavecenter badger. Brushes are (L-R):

2002 Shavemac Thuja wood 23mm Silvertip custom #22064 (Ht 110, Handle 48, Loft 62, Knot 23)
2007 Rooney Style 2 Size 1 Faux Ivory 22mm Super (Ht 107, Handle 55, Loft 52, Knot 22)
2010 Omega #80005 /Wm Marvy #5 beechwood 24mm Boar (Ht 110, Handle 55, Loft 55, Knot 24)
1999 Shavecenter German 19mm Pure badger (Ht 110, Handle 53, Loft 57, Knot 19)

Buy a cheap bottle of cinnamon from a dollar store (Family Dollar, Dollar General etc) and dump it.
Drill a few holes in the lid, and you have a very secure, screw top travel case.

All of the above suggestions work well and are worth consideration. I have used pill bottles and spice bottles as well. If you use spice bottles, it goes without saying that you want to make sure that the scent is thoroughly removed before you store your brushes in them...unless you like garlic or whatever scented brushes. Muhle offers a nice brush travel tube that is adjustable for brush height and is very light.

Regards,

Doug

I recommend the Rx bottle. It is light, virtually destruction-proof and protects a proper fitting brush perfectly.

My brush is a Rooney 1-1 which a small and luxurious silvertip.

This may seem overkill, but the Simpson Major travel brush is simply outstanding and comes with its own build-in container that doubles as a handle.

I love mine (in Super) and could easily use it every day. Firm but soft, very dense, makes short work of soaps and creams, holds sufficient lather for multiple passes... Plus, it is just so darn cool!

I used a lighter and a screw driver to make my travel brush carrier.

Easy peasy, spice weezy.

Same holes in the cap. :a34:

Simple solution. I have the Dovo stainless steel travel brush. Its a bit on the pricey side, but you'll never need another brush for travel, and its one that would last for 2 lifetimes. Its a 19mm silvertip that works fantastic.

Yeah, it's pricey. Looks nice. I have some old brushes that look exactly like the Dovo. I wouldn't use them, but it's a great design.

I'd worry about losing something that nice. I had one of the silvertip Chinese brushes that turns back into its handle. Those are nice, but I gave mine away. I am always tempted to buy another one. Mine was the cream color and I think was a Frank shaving branded one. The logo wiped off after a few shaves.

I only travel with things I can afford to lose. That's why I use the Tweezerman and a pill bottle. If I lose them then I'm only out around $15 most.

I have a few old pill bottles for my Simpson Wee Scot and Omega Bambino. Drill a few holes for ventilation and your off. It's not rocket science!

Totally concur. A number of years ago I stupidly left my cherished custom Shavemac at a hotel. Thankfully they found and held it. Cost me shipping to get it but considering the closest current model to what I have is the #341 at $196.99 + SH I considered myself very lucky. I retrieved an old retired el cheapo from Shavecenter and travel with that these days instead!
