travel strop

Hello B& B members:
What do you guys use as a travel strop when you are travelling with a straight?
I have been using straights exclusively since July and ironic as it seems I'm a bit afraid of my DE because thats the last time I cut myself and I still have a bit of a scar on my cheek from my DE! And the straight razor shave has become somewhat part of my normal morning routine...or sometimes at night depending on time. and mood.

I was looking at the TI travel strop and case but they are over $100!! And I already have a cheap paddle strop from Lee Valley and pasted it with TI finishing paste.
I guess for business travel and if you have a suitcase this that TI travel strop is ok but for backpacking in South America what would you do ? Not shaving isn't an option!

I have considered the following:
-stropping on newspaper
-strop on yellow legal pad
-cut up an old pair of jeans and make a linen strop
-use the phonebook as a strop

I guess what I'm really saying is that a paddlestrop is ok for suitcase and hotel but for backpack trips its rather buiky and a pain, but a small hanging strop will probably get crushed and deformed, so what would you do?

To be honest, if you are backpacking, it might be time to get over the fear of safety razors. The safety razors popularity really sky-rocketed in WW1 because soldiers had exactly the problems you describe with straight razors.

If you HAVE to use a straight on your travels I would recommend a strop like the Rup Filly which is small and simple. You really do not need a linen side. I would pack it in my bag along the outside wall, along the widest part. Get a barbers hone if you think you might need to do touch-ups.

Do you have to shave every day? I don't know how long you are going but maybe you can bring a stropped razor and have a special shave or two. If I was going long term and felt like I needed to shave every day I would just buy a shavette.

Yes I thought about it some more and will take the travel DE.
I am not really afraid I was more joking I just prefer using straights now :p but yeah its too much to carry around all that stuff.

Not sure if this is ok but what about getting a leather belt, then you can keep your pants up and strop on the road.

I bought one several months back and it was a good bit less than $100.00. I really like it a lot. Convenient as hell, nice leather and rough side on back for a paste, easy to pack....nice.

Another vote for the filly.

Small, lightweight, and pasted with CrOx on the back for touchups.

Barring that I would do as someone else posted and get some sort of shavette or maybe a SE or DE.

When I am on the go I just strop on my thigh. It does a reasonable job for trips shorter than a week. I haven't tried it on trips longer than a week yet so YMMV. If you have put a knick in your strop within the past six months this technique is probably something best avoided.

I am going just going to take a DE with me on holidays its a lot easier and size weight of my luggage will be a consideration if I am going to be on the go a lot, fromn place to place :p
Next time I buy a strop I'll cut my old one a bit smaller tie some string around the end to hang it on the door knob and use that as my travel strop. I spend about 3 months on the road for work but size and luggage isn't a consideration then, but it will be nice to have a ''reall'' shave
