What's new

Travel cases?

I travel often, and as often I "sleep" at a hospital and get up and shave there.

What has worked for you in terms of carrying your razor and blade about?

So far, I have carried a razor in a Norelco electric case (soft case with an elastic loop to hold the tube, and a nylon pouch that I slip the razor into) with a brush in a tube, or used a Mühle box that that razor came in. But I can't seem to leave a blade in the razor without it getting bunged up somehow---if I don't put a new blade in it, I will get cut up. Do you have some case that allows to blade to be left in and be protected? Or do you have a way to carry the blade out of the razor safely so that it can be re-used? Do the leather cases such as: http://bestgroomingtools.com/leather-sheath-for-safety-razors-p-245.html
work well for that?

Thanks,

JR

ive not heard of something that lets the razor travel with a blade in it.

Someone will know though, good luck with the search!

(ps, straights fold up in on themselves and are always ready to travel.. just sayin )

I always take my blade out of the razor while traveling. Early on I discovered that they can cut the interior of the dopp bag or my hand if I reach in blindly.

So do you just use a new blade each use, or do you have a safe to carry the blade between uses?
I know it shouldn't be a big thing, but I could use up blades pretty fast if I changed to a new one every day or two, since I shave every day and shave away from home so often. Or maybe I should use something less expensive "on the road", and save the Iridiums and 7 O'clock yellows for home use...

I have done two things.

First I have a case similar to what you linked to but it holds a brush and razor. It is very good at allowing a loaded razor to be kept, you just need to be vigilant putting it in and pulling it out.

Second way is I have removed and rewrapped blades with one or two shaves on them. I know what you are thinking, and yes I may be cheap, but I want to to use my $$ to fuel other ADs!

You could probably fashion a decent case from a soap dish and some styrofoam or similar material so that you can travel with the blade in the razor.

Hmmm. The "Make your own" approach. I hadn't thought of that. It would take holding the razor in a manner that prevented the blade edge from contacting ANYTHING else to keep it from getting dinged into being a hidden weapon a face destruction.
Something to ponder.

I'm curious to see more answers as I am traveling next month. I was thinking of the nickel-plated case from Best grooming as well. Depending on the size of the razor, it might make an interesting DIY to refit and recondition an old Gillette case.

I have one of these. It works very well. I drop my razor in the Dopp kit and don't have to worry about it. Fits the Futur perfectly, but any standard size razor fits (the Vision needs a special size). I question whether it's really genuine leather, but it works and at a much better price than the nickel Muhle boxes or the zippered Merkur cases.

The DIY solution I've seen is to take the ever useful 35mm plastic film canister (I suppose a pill bottle from the pharmacy will work as well) and cut a slot down from the top the same thickness as your handle diameter. Slide the razor in and snap the cap on. Instant protection.

I also have one of those leather case. So far it's worked pretty well for me. I'm just careful when I slide the razor in so as not to catch the blade on the inside of the case. I haven't spoiled a blade yet (knock on wood.)

I use a plastic soap dish/case made to hold a full size bar of soap. Picked it up for .50 at Wallyworld and hold eoither my Tech or SS perfectly. Snaps closed and fits right in my Dopp bag.

CVS carries a triangular plastic razor case that fits razors of any size. It also has enough room for a pack of blades and a soap stick. Like others have said, I would not venture to carry around a razor loaded with a blade for fear of mishaps. Merkur makes a travel razor that collapses to almost nothing, has room for spare blades and people claim to be able to carry it with a blade in.

Small Pelican case. You can cut the foam to fit your razor and it will allow you to keep the blade in it because the foam stops the razor from moving.

Sistema "Hard Razor Travel Case" :wink2:

They're $5.74AU for 3 here in most supermarkets, but believe they might be harder to find in other countries,
I'm sure something else can be substituted.
Foam is packing from an old hard drive.
Travel with a loaded blade and a spare pack if journey requires.

Can't quite get my Omega 21047 in the same case as well.

I've actually used my ipod nano case to carry around my Merkur HD with some paper towels stuffed inside to stop it from moving around. I guess I could place a sponge and cut out the razor shape for a slightly more professional look :)

I have a Hoffritz case and love it. This one isn't mine, but gives you the idea. I leave my blade in the razor all the time with this rig and have had no problems.

I originally used an old eyeglass case, but recently purchased the leather DE razor holder from best groom (web URL above) which fits all razors including my Super Adjustable.
