What's new

Modern travel bags, cases, kits, etc. for our razors, soaps, and brushes (and maybe a shave bowl)?

I am looking at getting a nice travel kit set up. I don't want a $100 leather razor case but, surely there is something between cheap Chinese stuff from Walmart and the super premium stuff out of the EU. ETSY and similar are a bit all over the place.

What are the good values for good quality:
  • DE or SE razor cases
  • soft or hard shave soaps, thinking 60g pucks and various sticks
  • travel bottles for aftershave treatments
  • shave bowls
  • related supplies like styptics pens, blade pucks, and similar things
TIA,
Sid

My favorite dopp bag is a small Filson. Heavy duty canvas and a really bullet-proof zipper.
  • DE or SE razor cases: Khaki or equiv., anything that protects your fingers as you search for things.
  • soft or hard shave soaps, thinking 60g pucks and various sticks: Haslinger, maybe, especially if you have an old Proraso tub to put it in. But personally I'd go for a tube of cream - Palmolive, Proraso, Bigalow, etc.
  • travel bottles for aftershave treatments: Avoid the el-cheapo stuff from the dollar store - go for the thicker-walled stuff for balms.
  • shave bowls: Timeless. Period.
  • related supplies like styptics pens, blade pucks, and similar things: Full tucks of your favorite blades, Clubman Styptic pencil or Pacific Shaving Nick Stick; any small alum block with a travel case.
Avoid anything you can't replace cheaply and easily.

Quite a few companies make small leather covers for razor heads that are very cost efficient if you're not worried about the handle banging around a bit.

For soap, I love clubmans soap. It only comes in a 2oz jar and is very affordable.

You didn't mention brushes, I'm a fan of the wee scott or mighty midget for travel. Both small and relatively affordable. Plus they work well with smaller containers of soap.

The Alpha One Niner Recon Eight is what I used, but they quit making it! 🤬

Simple, not expensive, they make more complex bags now. the older I get the more irritated I get with these “improvements”.

I use an old Eagle Creek folding kit bag: works for me!! :thumbup1:
Montbell, Osprey, Lifeventure and other outdoorsy brands do good travel wash bags. Which you prefer comes down to the arrangement of pockets and compartments you want. I think all are far more practical than the fancy leather ones. They don't suffer in damp environments and can be easily cleaned, for a start.

Yes indeed!

Do you want a bag that is ‘elegant and leather (heavy)’ or do you want a bag that is lighter and practical?

I’ve got a Tom Bihn clear packing cube as a 3-1-1 carry-on, weekender, stays on me dopp. I’ve done a month out of it.

And an LL Bean M travel bag that I could load for months

If you fly, you don't want razor cases any more. I have a leather one and used to travel a lot and as long as the blades were not in them they'd let DE razors through TSA. Now horror stories abound about them confiscating empty razors. Just use Bic Metals if you're flying. Forget the razor case.

Bottles:

I use these for WH, A/S splash, and shampoo, they're great. Comes as a dozen, but I shared with my kids who travel for work.

Those bottles look like the Nalgene 2oz bottles. Too bad you can't get the Lexan/Tritan versions anymore.

You can ‘trust‘ TSA to cause travel problems!! :facep::facep:

I use spray bottles you get in the Walmart travel section for my aftershave and my skin toner. Works very well--I've had one of them filled with Aqua Velva for about a week and a half now and no issues.

Good point! I have the $0.99 spray bottle from their travel section filled with Witch Hazel sitting on the bathroom counter.

I’ve got the tan one and love it. Been using it for many years now. Holds lots of stuff and I think I only paid $10 for it. Sorry to hear they stopped making them. That’s too bad.

I've used the same cheap open-style bag for the last 10 years. I don't like compartments in my bag as I'd rather organize it myself.

  • Razor Case: If I don't need to worry about my kit being in a carry-on then I just wrap my razor in a face cloth. I'm going to be using that anyway. If I'm doing carry-on then just something disposable like mentioned above.
  • Soap: Travel sticks like La Toja and Lea have been perfect for travel. Tried Spieck but I didn't like the lack of a cover and it caused some mild skin irritation.
  • Travel Bottles: Little spray bottles for witch hazel and AS. I think they are 1 or 2 oz bottles.
  • Shave Bowl: I face lather but you could use the collapsable dog food bowls. Stirling sells them or you could just get them from Amazon.

I currently have a Pelican style case the local gun store used to sell for $7. Holds my Weishi razor in a case, push up tube of Arko, Kent Infinity synthetic brush and toothpaste/brush. Most things stored in old pill bottles. Sometimes I'll add a shave balm.

Preference and style is key. I have a Lifetime Leather Dopp kit that is a nice luxury item that exudes quality, but I don’t use it anymore. I bought it because it was similar to what my father gave me to use for my dorm and fraternity house days in the 70s.

While very nice, this bag is heavy and does not lend itself to great organization. It also can’t be hung from a towel rack or door hook in a hotel.

I have used nylon bags from Camp Trails through Victorinox. All were serviceable but some wore out and others developed a film in the liners common to many bags.

Eventually I found my current and I believe final bag from Frost River. It is simply made from waxed canvas (durable and reliable), has pockets for organization, rolls into a eat roll, can be hung from a hook or towel rack, and has the ability to snap additional zipper pockets on to it.
