Thinking of buying this shaving Mug Scuttle

Any thoughts? I love the design and the colors that are available. It also helps a small business that is important to our economy.

Georgetown Pottery

Anyone know of other options similar to the above or have experience with it?

Thanks,

Mark

I bought one, used it for a bit then sold it and bought one of these, Dirty Bird 1.5. The G5 does have a nice design but I found it too small, and for me it never kept the lather warm very long, even when filled with boiling water. The DB 1.5 that I now use is plenty big and keeps the lather warm for a nice long shave using only hot tap water.

I misread the price. I saw $11 and then found that it is $45 for the mug and the $11 is shipping. That is $56 delivered. Too much for me to spend on a shaving mug, especially if it is a little small and doesn't keep lather very warm for any length of time.

I will look into the other one too, but it is a little high for me right now. My wife wants me to keep the link so she can have Christmas ideas if I don't get one. Since I will have something before Christmas, I may plant a new razor in her mind for Christmas. :biggrin1:

Thanks. The price isn't an issue to me now since it has the ability to warm the shaving cream. That makes it much more than just a bowl.

I have also seen great reviews and comparisons after doing a search in the forums for the Dirty Bird 1.5.

My wife's maiden name is bird, so that is a sign I should order the dirty bird.

Now, which size is best? The original or the 1.5? The brush I use is this one that I got as part of a set containing the razor, stand, brush and a glass bowl.

I've got one. It looks very nice, but I would highly recommend a Dirty Bird 1.5X scuttle from Julie at Dirty Bird Pottery. It performs much better than the Georgetown, IMO.

My brush knot is 23 or 24 mm, so would it be better to get the DB 1.0 or the DB 1.5?

Also, what is the benefit of warm lather compared to ambient lather?

I primarily use a large Rooney Beehive which (IIRC) has a 24mm knot. My Dirty Bird 1.5 is perfect. It also does well with my 28mm Chubby 2 and Plisson 14.

The 1.5 is just a little more than the 1, and it holds a bit more hot water, too.

I'd go for the 1.5. Julie is fantastic, too.

I've also ordered a large Moss scuttle (AD at work again), but haven't received it yet.

And you want warm lather. Trust me. I don't know if it benefits shaving, but it just feels so good.

I say 1.5 is the way to go. When using either my SR 3824 or Rooney 1/2, both 24mm knots, I find the size of the 1.5 to be perfect.

I liked it so much that I bought two, not that I ever use the second one. It just sits in the den looking pretty standing ready for Shavepocalypse.

As for warm lather, once you get use to it you will not want to shave without it because it just feels great.

Why dont you just make your own from a self-watering pot
and save a bunch of money; then with that money saved
you can acquire even more shaving supplies, to support
your addiction.....atleast that is what i would do

I have a scuttle from Robert's Ceramic Feats of Clay (ebay seller). It works GREAT and his scuttles are usually priced ~$25 with very reasonable shipping.

still sticking with the same advice i gave you earlier.
go to your local hardware store or nursery and pick
up a self watering pot. it will cost any where from 4
to 10 bucks, with the rest the money you were gonna
spend buy a new razor or something.

I am also thinking about the DB Bill Bowl instead. It is down to a bowl versus a scuttle for me.
