What's new

These just came in!

So I had a couple rocks custom cut, each are 12" X 3" X 1" and come with slurry stones.

Top one is a Welsh slate at 15+K Thuringan.
And the second is a purple LLYN MELYNLLYN at +- 12K

Now, I need to learn to use them correctly! lol!!

IME - the slate hones are fairly straightforward and not what I would term as difficult to learn.
My guess is that you'll probably get them sorted out pretty quickly.

Correct, AJ cut them. Essentially I won the auction for two 8" ones, and when I asked for the combined payment, I asked if it was possible to get longer ones, He offered to cut to suit, and charged me a few extra bucks for the new size. Very good price

Tell us how you like finishing off the 15k. I'm contemplating a finisher and considering all options, there's just too many! ;)

Well I am new to honing razors. I played with it today and its smooth, yet it seems quick. I am not the one to ask for an experienced response, Thats why I am here, to learn.

Adam, as for AJ's auctions, he has some nice stuff, prices are quite good, the stones are very nicely cut, corners chamfered, and flat. The surface will need some work, but its minor. I was surprised how fast the slurry stones worked up a nice smooth milky slurry. As far as customer service, and ease of working with him, I can say I will continue looking at his stuff, and would easily recommend him.

Ok guys, if you would answer me this. Will these stones produce better results if used as oil stones? Is water and slurry still going to give better results. I don't want to experiment too much, for I fear once an oil stone, always an oil stone...

I got my best results on those stones using water with a tinge of dish soap in it.

I found that using slurry on those two was defeating when trying to use them as a finisher.

When using a slurry, are they a gap filler between an 8K, and these stones used as a finisher with only water?

I personally think so. When I had my Norton 4/8, I would take the razor most of the way there on the 4/8, then step up to the LM with slurry. I would do 30 x-strokes on a very light slurry then dilute to water & add another 30 x strokes on water, and I'd do the same with the "Welsh Thuri"....Like Gamma said though (and IME), these stones work best when you finish on water rather than slurry...

whats a Welsh slate at 15+K Thuringan?

I think what he's referring to is the fact that AJ sells these on Ebay and calls them "Welsh Thuringians"....A misleading term no doubt since Thurinigans are German, but that's what the seller calls them...At least he did when I bought mine...
