ThermaCell Insect Repellant?

I recently saw an ad for ThermaCell insect repellant.

Have any of you folks tried this device and if so does it work? Does it work for all insects or just mosquitos?

Otherwise, what other devices have you tried that works?

I have used Deep Woods but with the heat down here in Florida I sweat and the repellant has to be applied many times. I would rather have a device that works without the need for spraying.

I've used it for the paast 2 years. It's quite effective on mosquitos and black flies. Make sure to have it upwind of you 5-6 feet to insure that you stay "in the bubble".
Repel 100 or Ben's 100 work very well also- as they should for containing 98.11% Deet.

Never tried ThermaCell, but Deep Woods has a new dry formula that I used last summer while fishing which worked great.

Is that the type of thing that uses propane? If so my family didn't have alot of luck with one like that.

Ive seen a commercial for a thing you clip on your belt. Probably made by Off. That looks convenient.

As far as spray on, Avon Skin So Soft

Thermacell works great on the mosquitoes gnats, and black flies we get up here. Here is a picture of a black bear hunt in 2008. You can see the Thermacell in the background and all the mosquitoes on the the bear, but we were relatively unmolested. Of course there are always some bugs braver than others but I don't think we got bit at all that day. And we didn't use any bug spray either.

Yes it works on butane.

Nice bear.

I have used a thermacell several times when stationary like sitting around camp. It has worked extremely well in those situations. When hiking we would use a typical deet spray, and while that seems to prevent the bugs from biting the skin where the spray has been applied, it didn't seem to stop the bugs from pestering you here and there. However, the thermacell does a good job at creating an area that is pretty much devoid of mosquitoes, etc. Wind could definitely be a factor to consider, though.

I keep one in my hunting backpack, and another in my truck in case we are at a picnic ballgame ect, I think ThermaCell did a great job, They seem to work and work well, I have never tried the Lantern yet, But i have a few friends that have told me there just as great as the small units. I only have used them for mosquitoes.

I have been using Deet in East Africa, but I think I will switch to Picaridin based spray/lotion.The thermacell looks good, but your best friend is a treated net for sleeping.

Agree with Alaskazimm - have used Thermacell many times in the Alaskan woods / tundra and feel it works great.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. My brother-in-law was in Wal-Mart and picked us up two Thermacell units @$19.88. Really surprised me that Wal-Mart carried them.

Needs milk and a bidet!
I'll tell ya what don't work....Citronella candles. I used to love sitting on my front porch, loads of trees in the yard, loads of birds and lil critters, saw a deer once or twice. Also plenty of misquotes.

2 Citronella candles burning one on both sides of my chair did jack squat. it was almost as if it attracted the misquotes. I saw one even land on the wax as it was burning.

use them alot in south Louisiana. work great in still calm stationary positions. get lots of refills. 1 butane bottle generally works for 2 pads. ive found pads to work for 4-6 hours before starting to loose effectiveness.

Thermacell works. Used to hunt near a huge swamp and I could sit for hours without getting a bite. I would actually see mosquitoes fly in and fall right out of the air. Didn't affect the deer, either. Also good for the warm days when red wasps would try to get in the stand with me. They would fly in, then fly right back out.

Put the Thermacell to the test while cleaning fish. It was hot and there was no breeze and the bugs were bugging me. :scared: My brother-in-law had one unit in his truck and we fired it right up. Much to my surprise the bugs did not go away - they just gave us a wide berth. It was like the unit put us in a protected area the bugs would not penetrate. The unit passed it's first test and will get a much tougher one when we go to Canada in July.

It will pass the Canada test also. The only thing I've found to work up here as well is DEET, but who wants to slather up in that stuff every few hours?

Amazing. I've used one for years...from turkey hunting to sitting on the deck. You'll wish you bought it years ago.
