Theory - Dove Balm and Nivea Balm are like Trumper's Skin Food. Agree?

I'm a balm man -- I like an aftershave balm that is alchohol-free, but not like lotion. I like a balm that soothes with a bit of bite, but absorbs readily. From the chain stores I get Nivea and also Dove (both in sensitive).

I've considered getting some Trumper's Skin Food, because based on what I've heard and read, it's the high end product that fits my preference. But I've about decided that Dove and Nivea are sort of the mass market version of Skin Food. They are glyercerin-based, and all the descriptions I've read of Skin Food remind me of how my balms work -- I rub on a very small amount, it has a wet feel at first and then just absorbs in.

Never used or even seen Trumper's Skin Food. Can anyone shed some light? Dove sure would be cheaper if it's just about the same thing.

They are completely different animals. Dove and Nivea are more like creamy lotions that the skin absorbs. Skin food feels more like liquid that seals the skin as it dries (to me at least), leaving a smooth, matte finish. Personally, I like them both.

Is there any other (widely available) product that is in the same family as Skin Food? I'm just having trouble imagining it, and I hesitate to spend a sawbuck just to find out what it is like.

I'm a balm guy, too, and have tried a lot. The ones that give me the most similar face feel after drying are Institut Karite and La Toja. That said, texturally, they are more like Nivea out of the bottle. You may want to see if one of the vendors who does decants offers skin food. The only difference between the Lime, Sandalwood and Coral are the scents.

Best description I've seen. I like Coral.

You could also get Trumper's sample pack. For 8 pounds you get 7 cologne samples, 6 shaving cream samples, and two samples of skin food. Or you could post on the BST to trade samples of something you have for a sample of skinfood. If I had any, I'd send you some.

Don't bother with the Skin Food. The Nivea is more moisturizing and soothing on the face. I'm really disappointed in almost every English/UK shaving product I've tried as I believe they are overpriced and less then top quality. In addition, Nivea is in a nice glass bottle and Skin Food in chincy plastic. Look at the ingredients and you will see there is nothing to justify the price Trumpers asks for their product.

A question for you Balm Guys. While down at Union Station in D.C. I stopped by The Art of Shaving and got some of their samples. I REALLY liked their post-shave balm but it is very expensive--I think it weighs in at $40 though there might be smaller sizes that are cheaper. For those of you who have tried this product, can you recommend a product that is similar in performance, but isn't quite so pricey? Thanks in advance, B Mike.

Neutrogena razor defense post shave lotion is a closer comparison, pretty good stuff, but Nivea energy balm is slightly better.

I've been a long time user of Nivea balm. Dove is the first one I've found that is as good. Nivea is slightly more liquidy, Dove is ever-so-slightly thicker. But both of them are very close.

I've never tried it, but have never seen a bad comment about the quality. The price is a completely different question. Personally, I'm not going to drop that kind of coin on a balm unless it's something that totally knocks my socks off. Namely, it performs really well and has a great scent.

I think many will disagree. The English products are superior to many off the shelf products.

I've used Nivea and Neutrogena post shave balm (not the skin food or Dove). I greatly prefer the Neutrogena- skin is NOT left tacky by Neutrogena, but definitely tacky after Nivea. The Neutrogena is available locally (CVS) for about $7 for 100 mL, a bottle which last me 8+ weeks of daily use. GREAT STUFF!! http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Se...85&sr=8-1&keywords=neutrogena+aftershave+balm

I have oily skin and like the AoS gel. While expensive, I find that only two-three little match head drops gives full coverage, so this knocks $-per-use way down

Thanks Jack and Beginish. From the sample I received, I did notice that you get a lot of coverage with just a little bit. I just may stick with this till some samples or recommendations lead me to something else.
