The Hurt Locker

Should I see it? Six Oscars has to mean something haha. I initially thought it would be really dumb, but maybe I was wrong...

I'd never even heard about it until the Oscar buzz, I had no clue what it was about until I watched the trailer on youtube this morning. It's next on my list to watch now though.

Saw it, yes it was good. I didn't think I was going to like it. I don't think it's the best movie ever but I've seen worse. As a measure, I really didn't like Black Hawk Down.

The Hurt Locker is filmed like a documentary for a few scenes (Hand held camera).

I had a 75 yo lady next to me that never saw an action movie in her life I think... She was entertaining... She almost took the seat off when we heard the first gun shot...

A different kind of war film. Outstanding in it's premise of "war as a narcotic". IMO, the best and most relevant film this year

I knew the premise, but now I'd like to see it.

On the other hand, I mentioned wanting to see Crazy Heart since I kept hearing about it and was warned buy a few people at work not to waste my time.

not seen it, may come across a bit 'bus man's holiday' if you get my drift.

Don't usually watch modern war stuff, the only exception was the rather excellent 'Jarhead'.

Some of the battle scenes are a joke. At one point the team leader says something to the effect of "Let's go over to this very dangerous part of the city and split up so we can cover more area". I'm sure they do stuff like that all the time in the Army...Ha.

All in all though, it was very well done. While watching, I was constantly in suspense and nervous for the characters. Not to mention that the IED stuff is heartbreaking.

I didn't watch with the idea of it being a war movie, but rather a movie where you were experience the mind set of people doing a particular job. The film just happen to be set within a group of the military that takes an extra-ordinary mindset. A special brand of crazy if you will. Like a lot of people doing this sort of service oriented work, be it fire fighters, rescue workers, etc. I thought it was a great movie and was glad to see it win in many categories over Avatar.

Hell yea we do, all my military training so far has been geared toward making me an individual, the Army has even changed the motto to Army of one, just to remind us.

.

Actually, according to the commentary track on the DVD, it was a complete jungle in Iraq at that point, operating guidelines were being created on the fly and a lot of operations were conducted "by the seat of their pants" in response to completely unexpected challenges. Apparently a lot military people have said that the movie is extremely true to the way things were on the ground at that particular time.

I liked the movie, watched it a few weeks ago, but when it was over I didn't think, "Wow, that was the best movie of the the year." Maybe I was just relieved it was over because I was so tense throughout?

I personally thought it was awesome.
It is 13th on Rotten Tomatoes rankings of Best Picture winners of all time.

Same here...but then again there were not many good movies this year.

I'm not an artsy kind of guy but I kind of want to see the movie about Tolstoy called Last Station.
