What's new

The fat has arrived

So after one year of wanting to try MWF I finally pulled the trigger and got some. It arrived yesterday and I was afraid that I had too high expectations on it after hearing so much about it.

I used it this morning with my W&B straight and had a nice shave. Not fantastic, not bad, just nice. See, I knew I had too high expectations :001_rolle

I realize why people say it's hard to lather, it took more work than some other soaps but I still got a nice looking lather from it. The slickness wasn't as good as I had expected though and the tallow/lanolin soap from Prairie Creations is frankly slicker.

Then again, I guess I shouldn't be too harsh on it after just one try. It takes a while to get used to new soaps and find their sweet spots.

Unfortunately it was much the same for me.

All the hype it gets on here constantly had me dying to try it.

When it arrived I had no problem tearing it up with a stiff boar brush, and got a dense well moisturized lather out of it.

Gave me nothing more than a mediocre shave, and for all the ranting and raving about how wonderful it makes your skin feel, it dried mine out like Cade.

Sold it soon afterwards

I bought the refill puck as well. I had a perfect plastic container to put it in.

Ah well, if I'm still not too impressed after a couple of shaves I guess it will be easy to sell it to someone :001_smile

It's good and all...I loved the scent even being as faint as it was. It just didn't deliver.

I get far superior shaves in every aspect from Arko, Palmolive, QCS and more.

I guess what really let me down was the fact that I wanted to join the leagues of people on here who swear by it and it's their go to soap for everyday use.

I was tricked by all their ranting and it's ingredient list leads you to believe that it will make your skin feel like a baby's bottom but it was drying as all get out and many people have a reaction to lanolin

I feel a sudden urge to go home from work and try another shave with it. I'll just do that :001_smile

Haha good luck! I really hope you can dial it in and get it to work for you. :thumbup1:

It's priced right, smells great, and isn't near as hard to lather as people say it is.

But, as always, YMMV.

You need to keep using it to make it good. Leave the puck slightly damp- it'll swell up a bit and when it does this it gets a little bit softer and lets you load the brush much more easily. Then it becomes great!

I have excellent results lathering MWF and I know that I do not have particularly hard water. I did find that it took me a time or two experimenting with the amount of water in the brush before I got it right. I know that different brushes react differently with MWF, but that is true with any product. Stay with it and I believe it will reward you for your patience.

Enjoy your shaves,

Doug

It's worth the wait and the trial and error.

Been through this myself.
Didn't get a decent lather for a couple of shaves, and then suddenly:

Now effortlessly, brilliant lather every time.

For me the best part of MWF is the effect on my skin. It is the most conditioning/healing soap I have tried. I tend to use my short dense soap brushes for it, but I get great thick and slick lather from it. My flat top two band Shavemac chews this up and spits out perfect lather in half the time of most of my other brushes. Maybe your brush is playing a part too?

I love MWF, it does make my skin feel great.

Just a small note: When lathering MWF, I do not use hot water, I use just warm tap water and I get superb lather. Give it a try.

While I am a face lather, I have found it works great in a bowl also, just adding small amounts of water until you get that nice creamy lather.

My daughter says this soap feels great on her legs and she thinks she likes it better than the TOBS cream she was using. She also makes her own lather(says it is part of the fun)

Have fun shaving!

Just to clarify, I get great lather. I get truly amazing lather, among the densest I've seen. I was thinking if I should take some pictures of it yesterday but never did. I just find that the lather neither is very slick nor moisturizing in my mind.

+1, my sentiments exactly

Maybe not enough water, MWF provides me with best shaves when the lather isn't dense at all. That's why I face lather and add water until I feel it turn into slick goodness. It's the slickest soap and it gives me the best shaves.

Personally the way I test slickness of lather is by pinching a bit between my finger and thumb and rubbing it. Then I put my fingers under slowly running water and still keep rubbing my fingers. you will feel that the soap is becoming more or less slick as the water mixes with the soap between your fingers. I find that MWF works best when it's just about to become frothy, it likes a lot of water and the lather will have larger bubbles than your typical soap.
