The famous Merkur HD 34C

I'm curious as to what other members do with their HD 34C. It seems that this razor is very popular to get into DE shaving, but after wards people seem to gravitate towards other types of razors (slant, open comb, etc). Myself, I've developed an affinity towards open comb razors, and I now find myself contemplating either selling my 34C or giving it to a friend that I think would enjoy wet shaving. Is this a regular occurrence? How many of you still have your first HD 34C?

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: Anybody want to part with their 2010 Muhle R41. Please PM me.

I've only been at this for 5 months, but see no reason to stray from my 34C, it gives me a great shave.

I shave with mine. If I find another razor I really want and don't have the $ I might sell the 34c as I have at least 3 other razors with similar heads. I definately would sell it before I sold my r89.

I still have it. I actually gravitated the other way towards a more mild razor ( a 54 SS and EJ DE87) for my daily drivers. I use the Merkur on weekends when I want the 4 pass luxury shave.

A HD 34G was the second DE razor I bought and it's still in use, mostly in the warmer months of May thru Sept. In the colder months I prefer my SS. My son-in-law has been using his 34C for about 4 years. It's the only DE he ever bought.

If you get a good one, little can beat it. I've wondered several times whether the shaving shack's alt are any good. I like the idea of getting a non-Merkur version.

It was my first razor. Keep going back to it whenever I want a smooth, mild but efficient shave.
My weber has an edge over it simply because of its longer handle. And no, I would not want to part with it...

I had that one and never really got used to it. Big problem with open-combs seems to be blade-crinkle. I don't know why that is. I had a couple of shaves with the 11c and it always felt wrong in an undefinable way, then I looked at it. Crinkled blade. It was very subtle, but after the 34c I wasn't having it...

I shave with it. I have several vintage Gillettes, 40's SS, Red Tip, Slim Adjustable etc. As well as a new Muhle R41, a Merkur Slant and a open comb 1904. The HD is by far my favorite DE razor. I use a straight razor most of the time but I still use my DE's a couple times a week (gotta do something with all those blades I bought!) The HD just works for me.

The HD is the workhorse for me, seeing about 95% of the action. I own two and have no intention of selling either.

34C was my first current production modern razor. I've tried about 50 other vintage and new models. 34C is still my favourite current production razor I use the most.

Well, thanks for all the great feedback guys! I did 4 passes last night with my re-plated Gillette New with a Red Persona blade and although it was a DFS, I find I have a lot of stubble tonight. Reading your responses has convinced me to try out my 34C again. That'll keep me busy until my Merkur 12c and Muhle R101 are delivered! :001_tongu
