Tabac? I don't get it.

Am I the only one here that isnt all that impressed with Tabac soap? My Trumpers, AOS, and MWF all seem to be in a different league than this golden boy. Just a couple of shaves with it. Lather is nice, but the glide is awful. After the first pass it leaves a sticky residue that actually stops my Futur on my face. Never have that issue with the other soaps. Maybe its the water (softened).

Anybody else experience this?

Tabac is the thickest, slickest lathering soap that I've ever used. My water is really, really hard, maybe it does have something to do with it. Try using Marco's method either in a bowl, or on your face. Works flawlessly for me every time. I use a boar brush by the way.

I used Tabac this morning for the first time since last winter. Truly wonderful stuff, and one of the best scents in all of shavedom. Plenty slick for me.

I sold my stick after 1 shave...just middle of the road tallow lather nothing special...mostly didn't like the scent...YMMV soap.

I used to use a pretty dry brush and added a few drops of water as needed. After watching an interesting video a few weeks ago I've gone 180 degrees in the opposite direction and just give my brush a single short shake after soaking it. It's very wet and even watery to start with, but's that just the loading process, not the lather making. Once it's loaded I get tons a really incredible lather.

I haven't used tabac yet but I recently got a sample. It is milled into little flakes... any idea how to make it usable so I can reply to this thread more thoughtfully?

Uh, no. You must be thinking of something else and not Tabac. Perhaps you have Taboconelle or something. :tongue_sm

Seriously though, try adding a little more water to your lather. I'll admit that Tabac is slightly less slick than MWF, but it's still quite slick with lots of cushion.

Use more water.

You would be amazed how much water this soap can swallow. You need to saturate the lather with water to get the full benefit of Tabac. When I face lather, I keep adding small quantities of water until the lather is thick and almost seems to shine. That is when I start shaving and at this point you should not have any sticky residue when you rinse your razor, in fact in my case, the lather is so dense and heavy that I can flick most of the used lather intermixed with stubble off of my straight razor.

I also have hard water (as someone above mentioned) and this is where the men are seperated from the boys.

I like to load my brushes quite dry and then build lather directly on my face, with my face dripping with water so as to hydrate the soap. When loading in thís style most of my other soaps create a few suds as the brush is fairly dry, however at this point Tabac is already kicking up some nice lather on the soap surface! When I take the brush to my face that's when the magic really happens.

When wondering why this soap gets so much love, I think you need to take into account how easy it is to get decent lather. I guess a lot of chaps might prefer Tabac because they cannot get such good lather from more trickier soaps such as Cade, MWF or even DR Harris?

I had the exact same problem. Monkeyed with hydration, technique, etc. Decided life is too short, and gave it away.

Exactly. More water.

As was said on these forums a while ago, Jesus had a beard because he refused to shave with anything but Tabac, which hadn't been invented yet.
